I. Introduction

The Windows registry stores the core data of the system. Therefore, during computer operation, the system frequently performs registry operations, at present, except for a small amount of software that does not make any changes to the Registry during installation and operation, almost all application software must modify the Registry during installation and operation, and the registry is easily damaged, A registry error may cause the system to fail. Therefore, in many cases, users are eager to understand the specific changes made to the registry by the application. However, we know that the registry data is very huge and the file System that forms the registry. dat and User. dat usually has a few MB or even larger, so if you want to manually view it, it is unrealistic to compare all the modifications made by the software to the Registry. To make these opaque changes known to the user, some special tool software must be used. For example, this article will introduce Regsnap.
Ii. Download and install

Regsnap is developed by Vitas Ramanchauskas. Run the installation program setup.exe to start installation. You only need to select the target path during installation. After the installation is complete, Regsnap adds the Regsnap Program Group to the program list in the Windows Start Menu. Click the Regsnap item in the Regsnap Program Group to run the Regsnap program.

Iii. Features

The main function of Regsnap is to "photograph" the registry, that is, when the registry is different, use the software to save the current registry and related content to the file. If the software is saved once before the new software is installed and after the software is installed, the files are compared, regsnap will report the changes in the Registry and other system-related content to you in detail. The usage of the software is actually very simple, but there are quite a lot of skills in practice, can do a lot of things that other software can't do for us. Next, let's take a look at how the software is used and how it works.

For example, if we have installed a software, we want to know whether the software has made any changes to the registry and important system files, and what changes have been made to the software. What should we do? Let's step by step:
1. Start Regsnap before installing the software. The purpose is to first record the original information of the Registry before installation.
2. Select "New" in the menu bar, or press "New Snapshot" in the toolbar ". A dialog box is displayed.

First, we need to set something: first, we need to record the Regsnap content. There are three options: first, "Snap All". In this way, in addition to record the registry data, Regsnap, windows system directory c: \ Windows by default), system subdirectory, Windows system configuration file win. ini, system. ini and autoexec. bat, config. the second is "Registry only". In this way, Regsnap only records the system Registry. If you select the latter, the running efficiency will certainly be higher. However, if you do not know exactly what the target software will do to your system, it is more appropriate to choose "Snap All. The third option is Registry from remote, which is only available to registered users. The main function is to record the Registry of a computer on the LAN, you only need to enter the name of the computer in the box. However, this function is not very useful for standalone users.
Then there are some projects for Windows NT users. You can select "Regular" to record all Windows NT registries on the local machine) or User mode to record only the registry associated with the relevant functions that are open to this User ).
There are two selection boxes. You can choose whether to require Regsnap to record the changes of each key value and DLL file. We recommend that you select both options.
3. After all the images are selected, you can start taking photos of the system registry. Press the "OK" button, and Regsnap will show you the specific process and report to you at any time how many key values have been recorded. If you have a large registry and a large machine, this step takes a lot of time. When the "Almost complete" prompt appears, it indicates that it is Almost finished. After taking the photo, Regsnap will give you a prompt box to report the results, including the total number of key values recorded, c: \ Windows, c: \ Windows \ system, and win. ini, system. ini, autoexec. bat and config. the basic information of sys.
4. After taking the photo, you must save the disk. Click "Save" in the toolbar. In the displayed dialog box, you can Save the recorded files as files suffixed with rgs.
5. Then you can install the software you want to install. To eliminate unnecessary interference, do not perform other operations on the system before installing the software.
6. After the software is installed, you can take a photo of the Registry and important system files. The method is the same as before.
7. After taking the photo twice, you can make a comparison. Press the Compare button in the toolbar to bring up a dialog box. In the "First snapshot" and "Sencond snapshot" boxes, select the two rgs files intercepted before and after, respectively, then select the Report type in "Report options.
Regsnap provides two report types: "show modified key names only" and "show modified key names and key vaules ", the former displays only the names of all the Registry primary keys or files that have been changed. The latter displays only the primary keys and files that have been modified, it also provides specific old data and changed new data. To obtain more complete information, we recommend that you select the latter.
Regsnap will output a comparison report after comparing two registry output files. Therefore, you must select an output file. Regsnap provides two output file Methods: Plain Text) and HTML hypertext. It should be noted that if you select the plain text output mode, even if you select the "show modified key names and key vaules" mode in the report type, the system cannot compare the new and old content. To learn the specific changes, you must use HTML hypertext) to output the report.
Figure 3 shows a comparison report of Regsnap. We can see that Regsnap's comparison report on the system is very specific. You can report the Keys Modified in the Registry, the values before and after the modification, and the keys added and deleted and the values of these keys. Other situations reported: Windows system directory is c: \ Windows by default) and file changes in the system subdirectory are also reported, including deleting, replacing, and adding files; Windows system configuration file win. ini and system. ini changes, including deletion, modification, and added content; automatic batch processing file autoexec. whether bat has been modified.

Through Regsnap's monitoring of the Registry, we can master detailed registry changes, which is helpful for users to learn more about Windows 95/98 or perform some complicated operations. For example, by comparing the Registry content before and after software installation, we can prevent hackers from checking HKEY_USER \ default \ software \ microsoft \ windows \ currentVersion \ RUN, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run, and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ 1_m in the registry project. \ CURRENTCONTROSET \ SERVICE \ VXD ), you can also try to extend the sharing software usage time. For some commonly used Registry tools such as Super Rabbit), we can also record the changes in the registry before and after modification to learn how it works.
4. Software type
Regsnap is a shared software. Different Versions of Regsnap have different trial periods and require registration fees.
