Option → editor → edit option: retain only "delete suffix space", "Wrap cursor", "auto brackets", "brackets highlighted", and "Work View Mode": modern mode
Option → editor → indentation options: All selected, "width", "length" are 4
Option → editor → selections options: retain only "delete upon input"

Kate 2.1 Configuration:
Set → configure Kate → applicationProgram→ General: "Start" is cleared, and the rest are checked
Settings → configure Kate → editor → edit → blank characters: Only spaces at the end of the deleted line are retained"
Settings → configure Kate → editor → indent: retain "indent with spaces" and "retain extra spaces"
Settings → configure Kate → editor → EDIT: "tab/indent width": 4
