Many campus broadband uses a dedicated computer as a server or a Broadband Router to share the Internet. However, purchasing a Broadband Router separately is a huge expense for schools. My school has never purchased a Broadband Router for financial reasons. I only use the only server in the school as the proxy server and Web server, but it is not enough in terms of stability and security. So I thought of using the old computer to make a software Broadband Router. After repeated practices, I finally succeeded. I spent a total of RMB 100 in the district. It has been verified that not only can the externally published Web be accessed normally, but also the Internet access speed is relatively stable. Next I will introduce my practices to you.

I. Software Broadband Router

Nowadays, there are a lot of software for self-made software broadband routers on the Internet. These software share a common feature that is based on Linux and can run on a floppy disk. The most common and simple configuration is BBIagent, but this item is not free now. The software registration fee for each router is USD 36. I think the best non-Coyote Linux is none, which is also known as "North America silver wolf". This routing software is free of charge.

Tip: Coyote Linux is actually a program running in Linux. It can be used to create a boot disk in both Windows and Linux environments.

2. Configure the hardware environment of the software Broadband Router

After identifying the software, you need to configure the hardware environment. I found myself in the school warehouse industry, and I am so stupid that I have 166 MHz CPU, 32 MB memory, S3 video card, with a soft drive, old keyboard, no hard drive, optical drive, and mouse ). If the memory size is 32 MB, the router will bring 250 machines to the Internet, and the operation is very stable (the memory size can provide users with more connections, making the network speed faster ).

Step 1: Make sure that the old computer can be started from the soft drive, and then purchase two 8139D NICs in the Computer City, and insert them into the old computer, so that a router can complete the first step of configuration.

Step 2: Prepare several high-quality and formatted floppy disks. Here are a few things to remind everyone, it is best to prepare a good compatibility with the same model, of course not the same), it is best to 8139D, the author uses 8139D type test once successful, however, only two NICs can be used.

Step 3: configure the network environment. First, set the IP addresses, gateways, and DNS of all clients according to the vro. Secondly, after the experiment, both the old version and the new version of Coyote Linux do not have good support for DNS proxy, which is also a small problem with this software, therefore, the DNS of the client must be set to the DNS provided by the ISP.

The following is my specific network configuration of public static IP ).

1) vro Configuration:

Internet Nic Configuration:

IP: 220.230.33. ****, subnet: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: 220.230.33. ****, DNS: 211.95.33 .***

Intranet Nic Configuration:

IP: 192.168.42.254, subnet: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: 192.168.42.254, DNS: 192.168.42.254

2) Client Nic Configuration:

IP: 192.168.42. (1 ~ 253), subnet: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: 192.168.42.254, DNS: 211.95.33 .***

Tip: It is recommended that you write down these settings after the configuration is complete to facilitate subsequent configuration and future management.

3. Create a Coyote Linux boot floppy disk

After the software and hardware are ready, start the boot floppy disk. On another computer, remove the formatted floppy disk from the write protection and put it in the computer drive. Run the decompressed file --coyote.exe, And the Installation Wizard appears.

Step 1: Click Next to set the IP address and subnet mask of the Coyote Linux router in the Intranet. Then, click Next.

Step 2: Set the router administrator Root password. Enter the password twice and click Next.

Step 3: skip this step and click Next.

Step 4: The key step is now. Select a public IP address based on your Internet access method. For example, select a public IP address and a second leased line. Set the IP address, subnet mask, gateway address, and DNS server address, click Next.
