Party SOUL:

1. Speed up system startup

Windows XP is about 2000 faster than Windows 30%, but it is much slower than Windows 98. However, we can greatly improve the startup speed of Windows XP by optimizing settings. To speed up the system startup, You can minimize the number of programs and services that the system loads at startup, optimize the disk, CPU, and other hardware settings, and modify the default settings, reduce the startup wait time. Most of these methods can reduce the system startup time, save system resources, and speed up computer operation.

(1) Msconfig

The startup speed of Windows XP is still relatively fast at the early stage of system installation. However, as the number of installed software increases, the system startup speed will become slower and slower, this is because many software has added itself to the Startup Program, which requires running upon startup, greatly reducing the startup speed and occupying a large amount of system resources. For such programs, we can exclude them from the Startup Group through the System Configuration Utility Msconfig.

Select the "run" command in the "Start" menu, type "Msconfig" in the "run" dialog box, and press enter to bring up the "System Configuration Utility" dialog box, select the "Start" tab (1), which lists the projects and sources loaded during system startup. Check whether each project needs to be automatically loaded, otherwise, clear the check box before the project. The fewer projects to load, the faster the startup speed. After the configuration is complete, you need to restart to make the setting take effect.

(2) Bootvis

Bootvis is a startup optimization tool provided by Microsoft, which can improve the startup speed of Windows XP.

To increase the startup speed of Windows XP with BootVis, you must perform operations in the correct order. Otherwise, the speed will not increase. The correct operation method is as follows:

Start Bootvis, select the "option" command under the "Tools" menu from its main window (2), and enter the Bootvis installation path in the "symbol path", such as "C: program FilesBootvis, click Save to exit.

Select the "next Boot" command from the "tracking" menu, and the "repeat tracking" dialog box appears. Click "OK". BootVis will guide Windows XP to restart, what is the default re-running? 0 seconds.

After the system restarts, BootVis automatically starts running and records the startup process, generates binfiles for the startup process, and automatically names the file TRACE_BOOT_1_1. After the program records the startup process file, it restarts the BootVis main interface and selects the generated Startup Process file "TRACE_BOOT_1_1" from the "file" menu ".

In the window, there will be several specific legends such as "CPU usage", "disk I/O", "disk usage", and "Driver latency" for our analysis, however, it is recommended that the BootVis program be used for automatic analysis: Select the "system optimization" command from the "trace" menu, and the program restarts the computer again and analyzes the startup process file, this allows the computer to start faster.

(3) Disable redundant services

When Windows XP is started, many programs or services are transferred to the system memory. These programs are often used to control Windows hardware devices, memory, file management, and other important system functions. However, many of these services are not very useful or even useless to us. They occupy memory and system resources, so they should be disabled, which can save up to 70 MB of memory space, the system speed will naturally be greatly improved.

Select the "run" command in the "Start" menu, type "services. msc" in the "run" dialog box, and press enter to open the "service" window. The service list in the window lists the names, statuses, and startup types of all services provided by the system. To modify a service, double-click it from the list. The Properties dialog box (3) is displayed. You can modify the service on the General tab, you can click "start", "stop", "pause", and "Recover" to modify the service status. You can also modify the Startup type from the "Start type" drop-down list, there are three startup types: automatic, manual, and disabled. If you want to disable automatic loading at startup of a service, you can change its Startup type to disabled ".

By default, 36 of all services provided by Windows XP are automatically started. In fact, only 8 of them must be retained (see the table below ), others can be set according to your own needs. The role of each service is prompted in the software.

Service

For use

Startup Type

Application Management
Provides software installation services, such as dispatch, release, and deletion.
Manual

Event Log
Enables viewing event log messages issued by Windows-based programs and components in Event Viewer. Unable to terminate this service
Automatic

Plug and Play
Automatic detection of new hardware, the key to implementing the plug-and-play function
Automatic

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Provides endpoint er and other RPC services.
Automatic

Windows Audio
Manage Windows program-based audio devices. If this service is terminated, the audio device and its sound effects will not work properly. If this service is disabled, any service dependent on it cannot be started.
Automatic

Windows Management Instrumentation
Provides a common interface and object mode to access management information about operating systems, devices, applications, and services. If this service is terminated, most Windows-based software will not work properly. If this service is disabled, any service dependent on it cannot be started.
Automatic

Workstation
Create and maintain a client network connection to the remote service. If the service is stopped, these connections are unavailable. If the service is disabled, any service directly dependent on this service cannot be started.
Automatic

Windows Installer
Install, repair, or delete software as instructed in the. MSI file
Manual

(4) modify the Registry to reduce pre-read and progress bar wait time

Windows XP will display a progress bar during startup. We can modify the registry so that the progress bar can enter the logon screen only once.

Select the "run" command in the "Start" menu, type the "regedit" command in the "run" dialog box, and press enter to start the Registry Editor. Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory ManagementPrefetchParameters in, select the EnablePrefetcher key and change its key value to "1.

5) Reduce the wait time for disk Scanning

When Windows logs record reboot caused by abnormal shutdown or crashes, the system automatically runs the disk scan program at startup. By default, each partition is scanned for 10 seconds before scanning. If each partition takes 10 seconds to start scanning, and the time required for scanning, it takes a long time to complete the startup process. In this case, we can set the wait time for canceling disk scan, or even disable scanning of a disk partition.

Select Start> Run. In the run dialog box, type chkntfs/t: 0 to set the disk scan wait time to 0; if you want to ignore scanning a partition, such as a drive c, when starting a computer, you can run the "chkntfs/x c:" command. If You Want To Resume scanning a drive c, you can use the "chkntfs/d c:" command to restore all default chkntfs settings, except for the countdown of automatic file check.

2. Improve system running speed

The idea of improving the system running speed is similar to accelerating the startup speed: optimize the software and hardware settings as much as possible to reduce the burden on the system. The following are some common optimization methods.

(1) set the second-level slow storage capacity of the processor

Windows XP cannot automatically detect the second-level slow storage capacity of the processor. We need to manually set it in the registry. First, open the registry, find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management", and select "SecondLevelData Cache ", set the processor as needed. For example, PIII Coppermine/P4 Willamette is "256", Athlon XP is "384", and P4 Northwood is "512 ".

(2) Improve system cache

Also at the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management" location, change the "LargeSystemCache" key value from 0 to 1, windows XP will allocate all the system memory except 4 MB to the file system cache, so that the XP kernel can run in the memory, greatly improving the system speed.

Generally, this optimization will greatly improve the system performance, but may also reduce the performance of some applications. Note that the memory must be larger than MB. Activating LargeSystemCache can play a positive role; otherwise, do not change it easily.

(3) Improved input/output performance

This optimization can improve the system performance for large-capacity file transfer, but this is only for Servers
