Sony is about to announce a "shock" message to the industry and players, officially launching a game virtual goods auction service. Considering its strong opposition to this in the past six years, this is a huge change.

Most people now know online physical auctions, thanks to various auction websites. Virtual items used in a variety of multiplayer online games-that is, the transactions of computer assets are mostly combined by the emerging underground auction groups. The scale of this underground secondary market is estimated to reach $1 to $0.8 billion each year, while Sony's game EverQuest (endless tasks) accounts for 20% of the total.

Now Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has joined this "virtual trend" by opening its official auction website station exchange. In a letter to gamers, SOE's Chairman John Smedley said that by the end of June, he would start providing virtual goods, coins, and roles for EverQuest II players on specific servers. Later, based on players' feedback, we will consider launching more types of game item transactions and more game servers that can be traded.

Soe claims on station exchange that the auction service provided by SoE is safer in the transaction processing process than informal auctions not recognized by the company, so that the individual privacy of the Transaction participants can be protected. Because SOE controls the conversion process of items without passing through a third party, virtual items are taken directly to the game database, so that what you see is what you buy is what you get, which can effectively prevent fraud. After the transaction is completed, the relevant items are automatically delivered and transferred. Smedley stressed that Sony only facilitates transactions and does not sell virtual items.

John Smedley explained the cause of the auction service: "The unrecognized online gaming secondary market is growing rapidly, and more players are participating." and "in our opinion, continuous innovation and Transcendence are always wise." Smedley believes that its auction service is the first in the industry and will establish new standards for selling online games, helping to set a direction for the industry.
