Spectre patch stable version: Intel released micro-code updates for the Skylake, Kaby Lake, and Coffee Lake Processors

Recently, Intel has released stable Spectre patch micro-code updates for Skylake, Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake, and related processors.

The patch, still targeted CVE-2017-5717 Spectre vulnerability. Spectre attacks that attracted much attention in early 2018 can allow user-Mode Applications to obtain system process information. Attackers can exploit this vulnerability to obtain users' logon cookies from the browser memory through malicious JavaScript programs. Spectre attacks break the isolation between different applications, and user programs can also obtain information through the kernel.

The patch released by Intel is a new stable version on the micro-code layer. It fixes frequent restart problems reported by users on multiple platforms.

A few weeks ago, Intel released a micro-code update for the Skylake processor, and now Kaby Lake, Coffee lake and other CPUs can perform the same patch update. Intel chip products include 6-8 generations of core processors, X Series processors, and Xeon Scalable and Xeon D chips.

Supported list

Firmware updates released by Intel support the following chip products:

Anniedale/Moorefield, Apollo Lake, Avoton/Rangeley, Broxton, Cherry View, Coffee Lake, Cougar Mountain, Denverton, Gemini Lake, Kaby Lake, Knights Landing, Knights Mill, Skylake, SoFIA, tangier, Valleyview/Bay Trail, XGold

In addition, Intel's beta fix versions for Broadwell, Gladden, Haswell, some Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge, and Skylake Xeon E3 processors have been provided to OEMs for final validation.

Fixes for other processor versions are still in the pre-beta or planning phase.
