Note: When SQL Server 2014 Standard Edition runs in a virtual environment authorized in "per core" mode, authorization for each independent virtual machine is the only valid License method.

SQL Server 2012 trial calculation:

(1) A virtual machine uses two virtual cores to run the SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition. 4 licenses per core are required. Because each virtual machine requires at least four "per core" licenses.

(2) A virtual machine uses four virtual cores to run the SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition. 4 licenses per core are required.

(3) A virtual machine uses six virtual cores to run the SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition. Six licenses per core are required.
