Sun Microsystem, which has published the source code of software tools around the Java language in recent years, announced that its core source code of the Java programming language will also be provided to the open-source community.
Sun announced the plan at the 11th JavaOne developer conference in San Francisco this week, but the company did not provide a specific timetable for opening the Java language source code. "The question is not whether we will open the Java source code," Sun's new CEO Jonathan Schwarz said in a keynote speech. "The question is how to open it up ." Java is mainly used in the server field, but now it has been widely used in many consumer electronic devices, even on mobile phones. Analysts pointed out that an open-source version of Java will help Sun out of the predicament and achieve profitability again. Sun lost $0.217 billion in the last quarter, according to the company's recent quarterly earnings report. Sun started out as a high-performance server, but now it is transforming to a service-oriented company, while open Java source code may help it in this conversion process.
