The configuration of the switch has always been very mysterious, not only for the general user, but also for the vast majority of network administrators, but also as an important and basic indicator of the level of network management. This is mainly for two reasons, one is the majority of enterprises configured switches are desktop non-network management switch, do not need any configuration, pure "fool" type, and the same as the hub, connected to the power, plug the network cable can be normal work; On the other hand, the majority of small and medium business executives are not very assured of their network manager, So even if the purchase of the switch is a network management, but also do not allow their network management personnel to configure, but to ask the manufacturer engineer or other professionals to configure, so these small and medium enterprises network administrators also have the opportunity to really do their own to configure a switch.

The detailed configuration of the switch is more complicated, and the specific configuration method will vary according to different brands, different series of switches, this article teaches you only general configuration methods, with these common configuration methods, we can extrapolate, mastery.

Typically, a network management switch can be configured in two ways: a local configuration and a remote network configuration, but note that the latter configuration method is only available after the previous configuration succeeds, as described below.

First, local configuration mode

Local Configuration The first thing we have to encounter is its physical connection, and then we need to face the software configuration, in the software configuration we mainly to the most common Cisco's "Catalyst 1900" switch as an example to describe.

Because the local configuration of the switch involves hard, software connectivity, so here are two steps to explain the basic configuration of the connection process.

1. Physical connection

Because of the portable performance of laptops, configuring switches is usually done on a laptop, and in the absence of a notebook, of course, you can also use a desktop, but it is more troublesome to move. The local configuration of the switch is communicated through a direct connection of the computer to the Console port of the switch.

Network-managed switches typically have a "Console" port (as described in the previous hub, as well as switches) that are designed to be configured and managed for the switch. Connecting and configuring the switch through the console port is the step that must be passed to configure and manage the switch. While there are several other ways to configure and manage switches, such as Web methods, Telnet, and so on, these methods must be based on the basic configuration of * through the console port. Because other methods often require IP addresses, domain names, or device names to be implemented, and the newly purchased switches are clearly not built with these parameters, connecting and configuring the switch via the console port is the most common and basic management and configuration that network administrators must master.

The different types of switch console ports are located in the same location, some on the front panel (such as Catalyst 3200 and Catalyst 4006), and others on the back panel (such as Catalyst 1900 and Catalyst 2900XL). Typically, the modular switches are mostly in the front panel, while the fixed configuration switches are mostly in the back panel. However, there is no need to worry that the console port cannot be found, and there will be an identity similar to "CONSOLE" on the top or side of the port.

In addition to the location, the console port has different types, and most (such as Catalyst 1900 and Catalyst 4006) Use the RJ-45 port, but there are also a handful of DB-9 serial ports (such as catalyst 3200) or DB-25 serial port (such as Catalyst 2900).

Whether the switch uses a DB-9 or DB-25 serial interface or a RJ-45 interface, it needs to be connected to a serial port configured with a computer (usually called a terminal) through a dedicated console line. corresponding to the console port of the switch, the console line is also divided into two types: one is a serial line, that is, both ends are serial interface (both ends of the parent), both ends can be inserted into the computer's serial port and switch console port The other is a flat line with a RJ-45 joint (rj-45-to-rj-45) at both ends. Since flat lines are both RJ-45 interfaces and cannot be connected directly to the computer's serial port, a rj-45-to-db-9 (or rj-45-to-db-25) adapter must also be used. In general, such a console line and the corresponding DB-9 or DB-25 adapter are randomly presented in the box of the switch.

2. Software configuration

Physical connection Okay, we are going to turn on the computer and switch power to the software configuration, the following we have a Cisco network management switch "Catalyst 1900" to describe this configuration process. We also need to enter the system before we formally enter the configuration, as follows:

Step 1th: Turn on the power of the computer connected to the switch and run one of the operating systems, such as Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows 2000, on your computer.

Step 2nd: Check to see if the HyperTerminal (Hyper Terminal) component is installed. If the component is not found in accessories, you can add the Windows component through Add/Remove Programs (Add/remove program).

OK, when the HyperTerminal is installed we can communicate with the switch (of course to connect and turn on the switch), the following steps are formally configured. Before using HyperTerminal to establish communication with the switch, you must make the necessary settings for HyperTerminal.

Catalyst 1900 switches are configured with all default configurations: All ports have no port name, all ports have the normal priority, all 10/100mbps Ethernet ports are set to auto, and all 10/100mbps Ethernet ports are set to Half-duplex mode, Virtual subnet is not configured. The formal configuration steps are as follows (this article takes a Windows 98 system for example):

Step 1th: Click the Start button and click HyperTerminal in the Attachment option on the Programs menu.

2nd step: Double click the "Hypertrm" icon. This dialog box is used to polarize a new HyperTerminal connection item.

3rd step: In the Name text box, type the name of the level terminal connection item you want to create a new super. This is mainly for easy identification, no special requirements, we type "Cisco" here, if you want to select a favorite icon for this connection, you can also select one in the icon bar of the following diagram, and then click OK button.

Step 4th: Select the serial port of the computer that is connected to the switch by using the Drop-down list box on connect.

Step 5th: Select 9600 in the Baud Rate Drop-down list box, because this is the highest communication rate for the serial port, and all other options take the default value. Click OK, and if the communication is normal, a primary configuration interface similar to the one shown below will appear, and the initial configuration of the switch will be displayed in this window.
