Technology sharing 5 steps to optimize your data center

The data center is a large energy consumer. Historically, data centers are synonymous with cost, energy consumption, and inefficiency. But this is not always the case. If you plan to build a data center or your data center is already under construction, you can follow Google's success stories to learn how to build an efficient data center. The following are the five data center optimization rules Google pursues when building their data centers.

1. Location, location, location

Has Google built a data center that covers more than 0.1 million square feet in Silicon Valley? No. Why? It's too expensive. The land is too expensive, the energy is too expensive, and the personnel is too expensive. Building a data center in Silicon Valley is certainly impressive, but doing so means that there is no limit. Therefore, you can select a better solution to migrate the construction site to a cheaper place. Google's U.S. data centers are located in Berkeley-gun South Carolina; kensbrafus in Iowa; rennar in North Carolina; Mez-gun in Oklahoma and Dallas in Oregon. All of these areas are far from busy areas and the cost of Silicon Valley is high, but will your company share price exceed $500 per share? That's what Google does.

2. Manage Air Flow

Google claims that "excellent air flow management is the foundation for efficient data center operations" and you should "begin to minimize the mixing of cold air and hot air to eliminate hot spots ". Data Center Air Flow Management is far more important than cooling, in fact, it can reduce additional cooling requirements. One way to reduce the mixture of hot air and cold air is to arrange hot channels and rack servers in the cold Channel configuration. In this case, the cold air is pushed to the front end of the server system, and the heat of the hot channel is discharged through the exhaust fan. Enough Air Flow can eliminate hot spots.

3. Adjust the Air Conditioning Temperature

Google also suggested that "increasing the temperature of the cold channel will minimize the energy consumption of the cooler. Do not change the temperature of the cold channel to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact, all equipment manufacturers can do this. As stated in Optimization Principle 2, air flow is more important than cold temperatures. Increasing the temperature of the temperature regulator by 10 will reduce the energy consumption of the data center by up to 25%.

4. Free Air Cooling

Google conducts a comprehensive survey on the locations of their data centers, and you will notice that there are usually abundant air resources available around Google's data centers. Air with lower ambient temperature can be helpful. Google said "the economic benefits of water or air can greatly improve energy efficiency ".

5. Energy efficiency Server

Focusing on the energy saving and efficiency of servers and storage devices should be the basis of data center design. For opposing data centers, if you want to stay competitive in the future, your technology update plan should include energy efficiency devices. Google launched the computer industry's climate saving action plan as a resource to mine energy efficiency servers. According to the energy efficiency levels of their computer industry climate saving action plan, server levels are classified into basic, bronze, silver, and gold levels.
