At present, broadband routers and wireless routers are becoming increasingly popular in the household and small and medium-sized enterprise markets, and readers will find that both broadband routers and wireless routers, each of them has four adaptive RJ45 lanports and at least one adaptive RJ45 WAN port. What is the difference between a similar port and a vswitch? What are their features and how to use them? What are their different uses? In this article, we will first take you to understand the knowledge and usage of the WAN port of the Broadband Router.

1. Understand WAN Port

As we all know, LAN ports are LAN ports, WAN ports are WAN ports, and WAN ports are used to connect to the Internet, so they are also called Internet interfaces.

WAN Wide Area Network (WAN) is a cross-region data communication Network, which is often used by telecom operators as an information transmission platform, such as telephone Network and broadband Network. The international Internet is currently the largest WAN, and the WAN micro port on the Broadband Router is the port for communication between your local network and the WAN, it can translate data between different networks or CIDR blocks so that they can read each other's data and form a network shared by the office of a home or a small and medium-sized enterprise.

All broadband routers have at least one 10/100 M Adaptive Ethernet WAN) interface, which can be connected to xDSL, Cable, and Ethernet. mainstream products support the Auto MDI/MDIX function of the WAN port.

Unlike the UPLINK ports commonly used on vswitches, the UPLINK port is used to facilitate cascade between two vswitches. It uses the same channel as its adjacent common UTP ports. If you connect a common port of a vswitch to an UPLINK port of another vswitch, you need to use a direct line. If both vswitches use UPLINK ports for connection, you need to use a cross line.

The WAN port is different. It is an independent interface used for NAT address translation between the WAN and lan. Generally, it supports Auto MDI/MDIX. As you know, MDI is the Medium Dependent Interface, also known as the "upstream Interface". It is an Interface used on a hub or vswitch to connect to another hub or vswitch without cross-cable connection. The MDI interface does not cross-transmit or receive lines. The interface is the MDIX interface that connects to the terminal workstation. There will always be one or two MDI interfaces) or MDIX interfaces on a device, while Auto/Auto) the MDI/MDIX ports can save the trouble.

Ii. Single WAN port usage

You can configure the public IP address in the WAN port on the WEB configuration page of a Broadband Router including a wireless router so that other computers can access the Internet through the WAN port. The WAN ports of a Broadband Router generally support dynamic IP, static IP, and PPPoE Internet access methods, as well as their extended Internet access solutions.

When dynamic IP is selected, the router automatically obtains the IP address from the ISP. This solution is suitable for broadband access modes such as ADSL + LAN and FTTX + LAN. When the ISP provides you with all wan ip information, you can select a static IP address and enter the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS address ), many leased line access methods use this solution.

Point-to-point connections over PPPoE Ethernet, represented by ADSL or Cable virtual dialing, are also the mainstream broadband access methods, after selecting this solution, you must enter the Internet account and password provided by the ISP. You can also select different connection modes, such as on-demand connection, automatic disconnection wait time, automatic connection, timed connection, and manual connection, based on different needs of the package and subscription.

In addition, many ISPs have launched some new WAN broadband access solutions, such as IEEE802.1X + Dynamic IP, IEEE802.1X + static IP. Taking IEEE802.1X + Dynamic IP as an example, this solution can automatically obtain the IP address from the ISP. However, you must first pass the IEEE802.1X authentication, and the ISP will provide you with the authentication username and password. In this setting, enter the user name and password of the IEEE802.1X authentication provided by the ISP, and click "Log on" to log on to the server for the IEEE802.1X authentication.

Of course, there are also emerging WAN Internet access solutions for L2TP and PPTP. ISP will provide you with the Internet account and password. In specific settings, you must enter the account and password provided by the ISP, and the server IP address or domain name provided by the ISP.

In addition, it should be noted that the MAC address cloning function required by the Broadband Router is also applicable to WAN applications. The default MAC address is the MAC address of the physical interface of the WAN on the vro. However, some ISPs may need to bind the MAC address of a network adapter, you can clone the MAC address of the current management PC to the WAN port in the "MAC address" column to reverse the configuration.

Iii. Multi-Wan port usage

Some high-end broadband routers provide 2-4 10/100 M Adaptive Ethernet WAN interfaces, and can connect 2-4 xDSL, Ethernet, and Cable bandwidths, providing 4 times the egress bandwidth of a single WAN port, you can connect to different ISPs to enjoy more services. It also supports automatic load balancing and real-time backup. You can specify a priority channel based on the source or destination address. Traffic is automatically re-allocated when a fault occurs.

The basic configuration method of each WAN port is the same as that of a single WAN port. However, because it has 2-4 Multi-WAN ports, it also has some special features.

By connecting two or four different bandwidths, and organically combining them, we can use a wide range of Load Balancing functions to allow different traffic to go through different bandwidth networks, users with higher bandwidth needs can use limited bandwidth more effectively. At present, no matter whether it is ADSL or 10 M Ethernet broadband, the monthly package fee is very low, and a few more applications are also very limited, with limited costs in exchange for bandwidth doubled, it is also useful for users with high bandwidth requirements.

With 2-4 WAN-port broadband routers, users can apply for multiple types of broadband access at the same time, such as China Telecom, China Netcom, and long-width, to reduce the cross-network bandwidth limit between different carriers in China, in this way, you can enjoy more special services. In addition, when an ISP, cable, or Modem fails, data traffic can be re-allocated to a non-Faulty port, so that the entire network will not be interrupted.

The bandwidth router of the Multi-WAN port is not particularly different from that of the single-WAN port. You only need to select the corresponding WAN port and enter the corresponding login information.

It should be noted that, in order to better achieve automatic bandwidth balancing of the line, you need to fill in the bandwidth that this interface is connected to, for example, the WAN2 port is connected to 2 Mbps ADSL, enter 2048 Kbps in the download bandwidth and 512 Kbps in the upload bandwidth. If you do not fill in the corresponding bandwidth, the line traffic will be evenly allocated. When the user's download traffic exceeds 2 Mbps, The WAN2 port will be overloaded, making it difficult for some users to connect or drop the line.

In addition, when using different ISP bandwidth, you must correctly enter the DNS server address of the corresponding ISP on the corresponding WAN port to avoid improper access due to DNS resolution errors.

For movie and game server IP addresses of different ISPs, it is best to enter the corresponding WAN port in the IP address application rules to achieve smooth resolution. If a problem occurs or is removed at zero time, you need to disable the WAN port of the corresponding line to avoid the router's full-automatic Server Load balancer function being incorrectly recognized, resulting in abnormal bandwidth allocation or abnormal Internet access.
