The evolution route of CDMA network to 3G is from CDMA one to CDMA 1x, then to CDMA 1xev-do and CDMA 1XEV-DV. From the recent two years, the so-called 2.75G CDMA 1x in Japan and South Korea has been successful application, showing a more powerful than GPRS data business support capabilities. From the point of view of the competition between the two major mobile communication standard systems, only the edge can make GSM operators have the ability to contend with CDMA 1x operators in the case of WCDMA without large-scale commercial.

From another point of view, with the increasing expansion of CDMA network, the range of CDMA network roaming is expanding, but not every GSM operator can get 3G license. In order to improve their market competitiveness, some small and medium-sized GSM operators are completely likely to select technical standards, and thus entered the CDMA camp, which is the most worried about GSM equipment manufacturers. Today, GSM devices are building edge labs around the world to arouse the attention of operators who do not have 3G licenses but are eager to upgrade to more advanced mobile communications systems.

To date, 3G standards and specifications have been agreed and entered into business. But it should also be seen that 3G system also has its limitations, such as: the lack of global standards, the voice switching architecture used in 3G still inherited the second generation (2G) circuit switching, rather than pure IP mode, because of the multi-user interference, CDMA difficult to achieve a high rate of communication.
