The United Nations Security Council today adopted resolution 687th on the formal ceasefire in the Gulf region by 12 votes in favor, one vote against and two waivers. Cuba opposed Yemen and Ecuador.
The resolution requires Iraq to acknowledge the border agreement between the two countries that it and Kuwait signed on 1963. The border set forth in this Agreement is 5 to 8 km more advanced than the current border to the Iraqi side.
The resolution requires Iraq to unconditionally accept the destruction and removal of all biological and chemical weapons and ballistic missiles with a range of more than 150 kilometers under international supervision. The resolution also stipulates that a non-military zone should be established within 10 km of the Iraqi side of the border agreed between the two countries on 1963 and 5 km of the Kuwait side, A United Nations military observer force is also deployed in this military zone.
The ceasefire resolution abolished the embargo on food and other necessities in Iraq, but continued to prohibit the sale of weapons and military technology to Iraq.
The resolution stipulates that the formal ceasefire will take effect only after Iraq formally accepts all the provisions of the resolution through the United Nations Secretary-General and the Security Council.
