1. connect to an idle Port

This is a simple diagnostic method. It is used to access a monitoring tool, such as a protocol analyzer, on the idle port of the switch. Connect the monitoring tool to an idle port of the vswitch to view the broadcast domain without interrupting the service. This monitoring tool has the same permissions as other sites in the broadcast domain.

In practice, we need to use the control port (RS232 port of the switch). In addition to the monitoring tool, we usually need to bring a computer or terminal to configure the switch.

2. Connect to the hub on the Link

Using this method, the technical support staff can see all the incoming and outgoing traffic of the file server and help the technical support staff solve a series of problems, including user login failure, low performance, and connection loss. This is almost the only way to view and analyze MAC layer errors in an switched network environment.

3. Use SNMP to query vswitches

The most effective way to diagnose a switch network fault is to directly query the switch to view the network status, which can be achieved through SNMP or the control port connected to the switch.

All vswitches provide SNMP functions. The main difference between them is the information provided. Some cheap vswitches only provide simple SNMP information and target the entire vswitch. vswitches that are more expensive can also provide detailed information about each port of the vswitch.
