When working with multiple computers, if you want to connect them with a mouse, the keyboard can be a hassle: Occupy a lot of positions, and not necessary. This article describes how to use the Synergy program to share the mouse and keyboard between two Ubuntu computers. With this method, you can automatically "jump into" another screen after you move the mouse over the edge of a screen, and on which screen the mouse is positioned, the keyboard can enter text in.

"1" Installation
Both Ubuntu needs to be installed:

sudo apt-get install synergysudo apt-get install quicksynergy

"2" Configuration server
Two Ubuntu synergy programs to communicate, there is the concept of server and client. I chose a more powerful desktop to be a server, a weaker laptop to be a client.
On the server, under your user's home directory, edit the file. synergy.conf (created without a start), fill in the following:

 Section:Screens Desktop-Server:Notebook-Client:End Section:Links Notebook-Client: Right=Desktop-Server Desktop-Server: Left=Notebook-ClientEnd

Among them, "Desktop-server" is on my desktop (server), with the hostname command to obtain the machine name, "Notebook-client" is on my Notebook (client), with the hostname command to obtain the machine name. You have to obtain the appropriate name according to your own situation and fill in the. synergy.conf file as above.
In the above configuration, "right = desktop-server" means the screen of my laptop (client) screen is my desktop (server), and similarly, "left = notebook-client" The left side of the screen that represents my desktop (server) is my notebook (client) screen. This setting is determined by the screen placement of my two computers. This setting ensures that my mouse will automatically "jump into" the screen of the notebook after moving to the left edge of the desktop screen. You need to make the appropriate changes based on your screen placement.

Once configured, execute the following command on the server to start the server-side program:

synergys

"3" Configuration Client
There is no need to fill out the. synergy.conf file on the client, just run the Quicksynergy program to set it, as shown in:

Where 192.168.1.65 is the address of the server, "Notebook-client" is the hostname that is taken with the hostname command on the client.
Click "Execute" to start the client after setting it up. After booting, the mouse, keyboard can be shared.

"4" client does not connect to server issues
If you are sure that the settings are correct, but you cannot allow client to connect to server, you can look at the system log on the server side:

tail -f /var/log/syslog

If there is an error message similar to the following:

Note:new Client disconnected#012#011/build/buildd/synergy-1.3.8/src/lib/server/cclientproxyunknown.cpp,282

Then it is possible that the client side and the server side of the software version mismatch caused.
For example, I use the following command to view the version of Synergy on two Ubuntu computers where connectivity problems occur:

synergys --version

As a result, the version of Server is 1.3.8, and the client version is 1.4.10.
This is problematic because the protocols used by different versions may be incompatible, so the client cannot communicate with the server and therefore cannot connect to the server. Therefore, you can download the same version of the client and server installation package to Synergy's official website, and you will find that the problem is solved.
