Ubuntu Linux releases a new server version every six months. However, this is the only two-year long-term support version (LTS ).

Ubuntu 13.04, also known as "riveting raccoon", today released the standard version (not long-term support ). The difference between the long-term version and the standard version is the length of support time, which is very important for server users. The long-term version has 5 years of support, and the standard version has only 9 months.

Mark Baker's Ubuntu server product manager at Canonical explained to reporters that the "raccoon" version is only a temporary version, paving the way for the future of the LTS version.

Some key new features on Ubuntu 13.04 will support Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in the future.

Ubuntu 13.04 provides the latest OpenStack grizzly cloud platform, including Ubuntu-based high availability features.

Baker explained that the high availability features provided by Ubuntu include MySQL database and Rabbit MQ Information Service. Before the upgrade, the Ubuntu Juju system only installs the MySQL database and a single Rabbit node.

"This is obviously a failure," Baker said. "So when you deploy OpenStack using Juju, you can specify high availability. It sets MySQL and Rabbit for HA ".

The upgraded high availability of the OpenStack grizzlies also supports Server users of the Ubunu 12.04LTS version.

"A lot of work on Ubuntu13.04 is also conducive to running on 12.04 ". Baker said, "This is a feedback from many of our users running OpenStack on 12.04 ".

In addition to cloud updates, Ubuntu13.04 also released multiple application packages to the latest version. Ubuntu13.04 has been upgraded to a new level because the hardware has enabled new kernels and new drivers.

Baker said, "This is only part of the benefits of Ubuntu." "It will be updated every six months ."

Migration

13.04 is the latest Ubuntu server version, but Baker does not expect existing LTS user migration.

"If you are an OpenStack user and are using it to create value, there is no reason for migrating from 12.04 to 13.04. "" There are still many reasons for improving the user interface on the client side ". On the server side, Ubuntu13.04 uses the latest Linux 3.8 kernel to support new hardware.

Baker said, "12.04 is just one year old and cannot be a thing of the past for any reason ".
