The title intended to use the keyword NAS, but considering that it is not intended to establish a Web management page, and some other complex functions, it does not avoid misleading, the scope is emphasized on "Windows File Sharing" and "FTP server. Specifically, Samba and vsftpd are used in Linux.
Installing and using Samba and vsftpd are not difficult. This article is just for your own notes. The reason why I gave up using off-the-shelf NAS servers such as FreeNAS or NAS4Free to focus on the release is that it is not compatible with Hyper-V. If I have read my previous articles, I should remember that my home server is an old machine (now two) with a good configuration, and the Microsoft Hyper-V server is running on it, all other Windows and Linux servers exist in the form of virtual servers and focus on a small amount of things.
Not long ago, I upgraded my master server and now configured with dual Xeon L5420 + 32 GB memory, which is enough. The preceding virtual servers include Windows Home Server 2011 (backup and file sharing), Windows Server 2012 R2 Core (Domain Controller and DNS), Windows 2012 R2 (VPN and DFS), Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS (proxy Server), Xubuntu 14.04 (Matlab Server ).
All the virtual server files are stored on the SSD, and the two SSDS constitute RAID 1. All servers that require large-capacity storage are attached with traditional hard disks. Four 2011 TB hard disks form RAID 10, which are used for data storage in Windows Home Server and Ubuntu.
This combination maximizes the running speed and data security. The following figure shows an approximate graph:

This Ubuntu File Server + FTP Server seems to overlap with Windows Home Server 2011, but this is a plan I have considered for a long time.
After all, Windows Home Server 2011 is a new product that Microsoft has stopped pushing. Although official technical support will last until 2017, it should be replaced.
In addition, this is the star *** event recently launched by iCloud, which once again proves that my concerns about cloud storage are correct. I think cloud can help us work together and share non-sensitive files, but it is definitely not the final storage solution for all the data. Just like you can't put your cash in a safe deposit box and place it in another place, even if this person promises you "he will be here and serve you at any time ".
No one can ensure that data storage is absolutely secure. If the data is sensitive enough, people who can trust it at any time are still themselves. Therefore, please do not store sensitive things in other places. Buying more hard disks will not cost you a little.
After removing the hard-to-use iTunes, you can choose NAS and FTP for the iPhone backup solution without considering cloud backup, so I had the idea of building FTP on Ubuntu. Of course, it is not difficult to add FTP support to Windows Home Server 2011, but my Windows Home Server is external, and I always think this will eventually be eliminated by me, therefore, we do not want to rely too much on this system.
