This article describes how to use Ubuntu LiveCD to test the desktop, local or local prototype before buying a computer in the Computer City.

We recommend that you directly save this page to the USB flash drive. When you try the computer city, you can copy and paste the command directly.

The most important thing in choosing a machine on which to learn/use Linux is whether its hardware is Linux-compatible. again, this will be true for some modern machines, which have Windows-specific hardware that won't work with Linux.

Nothing worse than buying a new computer and finding out it's got some chipset or other that Linux doesn't work with yet

Purpose:

1. Check the computer configuration to avoid being cheated by the profiter. Maybe with the general improvement of computer knowledge, you can pretend to be a great leap with sailian, but you should be careful.

2. Test the compatibility between computer hardware and linux. This is especially important if you plan to install linux after buying it.

Obtain ubuntu Desktop LiveCD:

Method 1. Download from the http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and burn it on your own. alertnate CD is not recommended.

Method 2. Go to https://shipit.ubuntu.com/apply for free CD.

You can also build a usb system that includes more testing tools by yourself, either using a usb flash drive or a mobile hard drive. this can also include more drivers. there are a lot of production methods in the forum, and I will not go into details here.

Note that after obtaining the CD, it is best to confirm the correctness of the CD first, so that the computer city cannot read the disk.

Test procedure:

For the assembled desktops, it may still be bare metal when the computer is just set up. It is best to take the following steps before he installs ghostXP of the computer city edition for you to avoid wasting time and feelings for each other:

Step 0: If the laptop is powered on by a battery and connected to the AC power source, boot into the BIOS settings, first check if there are any professional settings options in the BIOS settings, such as sata hard drive working mode options, irq acpi settings and so on. You should first purchase a professional bios version. Otherwise, the problem will be hard to solve. (For example, I can only set the startup sequence for this Shenzhou version ). Then, choose to start the computer from the optical drive, put the prepared CD, and restart.

Step 1: When the ubuntu interface is displayed, press F2 and select the Chinese language (simplified). Even if the Chinese language is selected, it is still a large part of English after entering the system.

Step 2: Start ubuntu desktop cd and select the first option in the cd Start Menu. Note: if you cannot connect to the ubuntu graphic interface, you are advised to leave and buy the computer, it will be very depressing in the future. if you are really interested in this model, you can also try the security mode, but you can enter the security mode desktop does not guarantee normal installation, but there is always a way to install.

Step 3: Check whether the basic information of the computer is the same as expected (enter in application --- appendix ---- Terminal Applications --- Accessories ----- Terminal ):

Cat/proc/cpuinfo check your CPU. Pay attention to the following: if the seller claims to be dual-core, there will be two CPUs: processor: 0 and processor: 1; in addition, the cache size value is the so-called second-level cache.

Cat/proc/meminfo check the memory capacity. You can also verify it in sudo lshw later.

Sudo fdisk-l check the disk capacity, which can also be seen in system-system management-partition Editor. The graphic interface is more intuitive.

Step 4: advanced information:

Input lspci: some information about PCI devices is displayed.

Enter sudo lshw to view the information. note that *-memory below *-bank: 0 represents a memory slot, followed by clock: 533 MHz (1.9ns) DDR 533 memory is inserted in this slot. (note that the memory frequency cannot be seen without sudo)

Step 5: test the video card

This step is troublesome. If your machine is an intel integrated graphics card, the resolution you are using should be the best resolution. You can try to run glxgears, the current integration card should be able to run around FPS.

If you are a N card or a card, the glxgears may not run 1000 because the driver of the video card is not yet correct. If the driver is installed with the video card, the liveCD cannot save the information, so there is no better way, unless you install a ubuntu...

In addition, because ubuntu7.10 has been integrated with compiz, you can also try: system-preference-appearance-visual effects in liveCD to see if Extra can be selected. If Extra is selected, you can drag the window to see the jelly effect. In addition, the animation effect should be minimized.

Step 6: test the hard drive speed

Input: sudo hdparm-t/dev/sda will be displayed soon

/Dev/sda:

Timing buffered disk reads: 110 MB in 3.05 seconds = 36.06 MB/sec

This value should be above 35 MB/sec for the notebook, and it is best to reach 50 MB/sec for the desktop hard disk. You can test the average value several times.

Step 7: test the shortcut key:

This is basically for notebook users. It is to test whether the buttons that control the volume and backlight are used, whether the num lock AND number keys are normal, and some other keys may exist, for example, the key that controls the wireless network card.

In addition, some desktop users may have buttons such as opening a browser on their keyboards. You can also test the buttons. Most of ubuntu supports them Now (that is, enabling firefox.

For the sake of security, we can add a general test of the keyboard here. You can create an empty file on the desktop and open it in a text editor. It is best to click all the buttons on the keyboard. Check whether some keys are unavailable or not responding.

Step 8: Miscellaneous

Take a look at the specific configuration. For example, if some readers have integrated a card reader, they can bring an SD card and read it on site.

There may be wireless NICs, or you can enter ifconfig to see if there is any.

There are also small issues such as whether or not the headset speaker will sound at the same time after the headset is inserted. Consider as much as possible.

By the way, there is a Examples folder on the desktop to test the sound. You can double-click the video that opens the first mark to test the sound, you can also test whether the video card is stuck or not (remember to maximize it and check the effect), hey.

Step 9: Liquid Crystal Bad Points Test

If the above tests can be successfully passed, it should be said that there is basically no major problem. Next, there is also a very important step. The LCD bad points test will be skipped if the LCD is not used.

Method: In system-preference-Session-current Session, select gnome-panel and click remove and apply to remove the upper and lower panels. delete the two icons on the desktop. close all open windows. right-click the blank Desktop, Change Desktop Background in wallpaper, select the first one, monochrome, and then select the color area below, respectively, white, black, red, green, blue. observe the screen carefully to see if there are any bad points and colored points. if not, congratulations. it is also mentioned here that it seems that the following three bad points defined in the standards are all qualified. However, although qualified, it is guaranteed that you will not be satisfied, therefore, it is better to be careful when buying it.

At the same time, you should also check whether there is a phenomenon such as light leakage or color bias on the monitor. For example, when the display is full red, some places are darker and some places are lighter. if you have a high requirement on the visual angle of the monitor, you should also look at the effects of different angles.

Step 10: power switch and shutdown Test

This is the last step. Since all the windows and panels have been closed, press ctrl + alt + backspace to end X and then restart. Wait for 10 seconds, ubuntu users will automatically log on, and then there will be a panel. if it is a notebook (battery has been installed before), there is a one-step test of power switching, that is, the AC power adapter is directly switched on, check whether the current instance can be transferred to the battery mode. Normally, an icon is displayed in the notification area, indicating that the instance is already in battery mode. let's take a look at the mouse and keyboard response at this time. I have seen a book. After the exchange, all the buttons are invalid and can only be forced to shut down. if this step is also normal, click the shutdown button and select shutdown. When it is ready, the system will prompt you to remove the disc and press enter. If you press enter, the power will go down smoothly, congratulations! Your Computer passed the last test.

In addition, ubuntu LiveCD also has a memory testing tool, but this is time-consuming. the method is to select the memtest86 In the Startup menu and it takes about 40 minutes to run it again to 100% (and then start again). If an error is detected, marked in red. if you have enough time, you can run.

The above are just some of my initial steps.
