Use vmwaretools to optimize Virtual Machine compression for Virtual Disks

Virtual machines are essential tools for my daily work. They have brought great convenience to my work over the past four years. The first time I used a virtual machine for my graduation project at school, I needed to compile the Linux kernel and cut the system. It would be twice the result with half the effort. Later, VMWare was inseparable.
After installing the operating system in the virtual machine, you must install vmwaretools, which can significantly improve the performance of the virtual machine:
  • Significantly improves overall graphics performance
  • Synchronize time between the host and client
Note:Only when you set the clock in the client's operating system to a time earlier than the time set in the host can you synchronize the time between the client and the host's operating system.
  • Automatically capture and release the mouse cursor
  • Copy and paste data between the host and the client, or from one virtual machine to another.
  • Improved network performance

Now the machine is equipped with more than a dozen virtual machines. Although it is convenient to work, it also occupies a lot of space. The following describes how to reduce the occupied space:
1. Organize the fragments of a virtual disk. You can organize the fragments of a virtual disk and reschedule the data on the virtual disk so that separate blocks that constitute specific files on the Virtual Disk are adjacent to each other. Use the fragment function to improve the performance of your virtual disk, but it does not reduce the amount of storage space that the Virtual Disk consumes in the host operating system.

  • Select File> open to open the virtual machine configuration file (. vmx) You want to modify ).
  • Keep the VM shut down.
  • Choose Settings> Configuration editor from workstation.
  • On the hardware tab, select a virtual disk from the device list.
  • Click "fragment" on the right ".

2. Compress a virtual disk. With the compression feature provided in VMware Tools, You can physically recycle space in a virtual disk. For example, if you have deleted files from a virtual disk and want to reduce the amount of storage space that the Virtual Disk consumes in your host operating system, you can use the compression function to delete extra space from a virtual disk.
2.1 to compress a virtual disk in a Windows operating system:

  • Double-click the VMware Tools icon (usually in the system tray at the end of the task ).
  • Click the "compression" tab.
  • Select the disk you want to compress and click "prepare for compression ".
  • Follow the prompts on the screen.

2.2 to compress a virtual disk in a Linux operating system:

  • Open VMware Tools. If it is unavailable, runVmware-toolboxLoad it.
  • Click the "compression" tab.
  • Select the mount point of the disk you want to compress and click "prepare for compression ".
  • Follow the prompts on the screen.
