Use WDS to capture prepared templates for Windows 8 Systems

We tried to use WDS to deploy the system, and then used MDT to capture and MDT to add human task sequences. However, in some cases, we may not need to be so troublesome, because we just want to use WDS to do something really meaningful. For example, we want to capture the system image of a template computer before deployment, and then deploy the image to multiple target computers, everything is so simple. We don't need to install the application after the MDT is deployed, because we just want to use WDS.

The Windows Deployment Service Based on Windows Server 2012 is very good. We can do what we want in a simple way. Well, let's stop talking about it. First, we have prepared our system, a Windows 8 computer, and the applications we need have been installed on it. Note: before that, I suggest you use sysprep to enter the audit mode, and then complete all the tasks in the audit mode so that we can leave no trace, for example, users created in OOBE mode can also be deleted in audit mode.

If everything is ready, start sysprep. After selecting sysprep, shut down the system, because we need to configure WDS later to capture the image of the current system.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image002 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image002 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P514C51-1.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

Wait patiently for the system to shut down and open the template virtual machine configuration, if it is a virtual machine), we need to add the old network adapter in the virtual machine settings, because the new network adapter does not support starting.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image003 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image003 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P5143N5-2.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

After adding the old network adapter, We need to delete the original network adapter and assign the old network adapter to the same vlan id as the WDS.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image004 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image004 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P514DZ-3.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

The last step of virtual machine setting is to set the priority order of the old network adapter to the top in the BIOS.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image005 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image005 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P5141637-4.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

Then we open WDS. Before that, we have added the installation image and startup image. Now we can create a capture image based on the startup image. Open the WDS Management Unit, expand the server-boot image, right-click the boot image we added, and select "Create Image Capture image ".

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image006 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image006 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P5144333-5.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

In the pop-up create capture image wizard, we can set the image name and description. This is a description of the wim file and is also seen at startup, then you can specify the storage location of the captured image. Note that this refers to the captured image we created, rather than the storage location of the created image in the capture system.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image007 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image007 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P51423Z-6.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

Click Next to create a capture image from the existing startup image.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image008 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image008 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P5143346-7.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

After creating the image, you can immediately add the image to WDS for quick configuration and convenience.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image009 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image009 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P5141W6-8.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

Then let's set the location of the captured image we created. Of course, this is also captured from the location we just stored. You don't need to set it again, just go to the next step.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image010 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image010 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P5144208-9.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

Start adding the startup image.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image011 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image011 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P514A12-10.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

After that, we can start our virtual machine. Follow the same steps to obtain the IP address and press F12.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 404 "title =" clip_image012 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image012 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P51442N-11.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

However, in the Windows Boot Manager location, we will choose to start the image, because we have a standard installation image and a captured image just created, now we want to capture the system, so we choose to capture the image to start.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image013 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image013 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P5141Y1-12.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

Next, we can see the true face of WDS image capturing. In fact, it is also a simple Capture Wizard. Click Next to start simple configuration.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image014 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image014 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P514LJ-13.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

First, select the volume to be captured, that is, the location of the system disk. Then, you can set an image name and description for the captured image.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image015 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image015 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P5145434-14.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

The next step is to select the storage location. Note that the local disk exists by default, because I am a virtual machine or due to environment requirements, I chose to put the captured image directly in the image folder of my WDS server. Because browsing cannot be viewed directly, we can still enter \ WDS Server FQDN \ C $ to access the default management share, note that you must enter the full name of the WDS domain name. Otherwise, the domain name cannot be resolved.

Then, you can add the captured image to the installation image of the WDS server, enter the full name of the WDS server, and click Connect. If OK, we can see the name of our image group, it indicates OK.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image016 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image016 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P5141063-15.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

The next step is a long capture. The time spent here must be related to the performance of our machines. If we store them on the WDS server through a shared path, it is also related to our network speed.

650) this. width = 650; "height =" 484 "title =" clip_image017 "style =" margin: 0px; border: 0px currentcolor; background-image: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; "alt =" clip_image017 "src =" http://www.bkjia.com/uploads/allimg/131227/1P514M27-16.jpg "border =" 0 "/>

There is nothing to continue with. After the capture progress is complete, remember to check whether the WIM file has been successfully captured at the corresponding position of WDS, check whether the installation image is successfully added in the WDS console. Then, you can use the WDS template to deploy and capture Windows 8 to the target computer. It is still very simple to capture the image through WDS, but WDS is very useful in the actual environment, compared with MDT, deploying a system with pure WDS is still very good.
