The earliest brew platform was launched in September 2001 and is mainly used by CDMA mobile operators in the United States.

Eco-System Adoption

As of October 2011, Qualcomm reported that more than 70 device OEMs produced more than 1400 brew-enabled handsets, including Htc,zte,lg, Samsung, Inq Mobile and Pantech, reporting more than 250M of brew phones worldwide.

Brew mobile phones can run third-party apps and access a ready-to-use directory. According to Qualcomm, there are about 18,000 brew applications in the first quarter of 2010, excluding bell tones and screensavers.

Brew tradition is strong in the United States, followed by Latin America, China, India and Asia-Pacific. As of June 2010, more than 45 mobile operators worldwide are providing support for brew products, according to Qualcomm.

The brew operator ecosystem was originally built around CDMA operators, but Qualcomm also actively promoted gsm/umst operators, albeit with limited success. Technical Basics

The brew platform is based on a private Qualcomm operating system, called AMSS or Rex. Middleware contains APIs for connections, databases, languages, media, networking, security, telephony, and the UI. Brew provides UI artifacts, but does not itself contain the UI.

Brew is primarily for feature phones and low-end smartphones, and cannot be applied directly to other device types such as tablets and connected TVs.

Brew itself does not provide embedded applications, which need to be developed or licensed separately by the handset maker. For example, Opera Web browser is preinstalled on the platform, but not part of the platform.

Brew third-party apps are discovered through the operator's branded operator store or the client on the device (depending on the device model).

Opinion

Developed brew, Qualcomm aims to improve chip design sales and enhance competitiveness, especially for low-priced chip competitors such as MediaTek.

With the launch of the platform (BREW MP) version, Qualcomm has improved its completeness to reduce the time to market and reduce the development cost of the brew MP design. It works with third-party vendors to pre-integrate additional software components, such as Web browsers, messaging software, and navigation solutions, and currently has more than 25 third-party partners in the company.

Although brew equipment is still being sold, indications from OEMs and operators indicate that the platform is nearing its deadline. The main advantage of brew is that it can run on low-priced chips. This advantage becomes less important as "smart" devices are increasingly using the touchscreen UI, as the cost of large display touchscreens is more significant in the BOM (bill of materials).

In addition, Qualcomm has not been able to keep this more than 10-year-old platform up-to-speed, improve certification efficiency, and comply with Apple,google and Microsoft's market standards. As a result, the Brew MP platform was decadent last year in terms of developer orientation and OEM adoption.

Since Android's Windows Phone 7 is more effective than brew in driving Qualcomm chip sales, we expect Qualcomm to halt the development of the brew platform.
