Gateway, also known as the inter-network connector and Protocol converter, is the most complex network interconnection device on the transport layer to achieve network interconnection, it is only used for two high-level protocols with different network interconnection. The Gateway structure is similar to that of a router. The Gateway can be used for Wan interconnection or LAN interconnection 。

How the Protocol converter works

There are many types of protocol converters, most of which are basically two-layer devices, a RAD protocol converter is often used to convert 2 m E1 lines into V.35 data lines to connect to the router devices. Of course, 2 m to twisted pair wires are also available, with the help of 2 m communication lines, you can achieve remote access and expansion of the LAN range 。

When a router's physical interface or virtual interface of the routing module receives a packet, it determines whether to forward the packet by judging whether the destination address and source address are in the same network segment, generally, a small office network device has only two interfaces, one connecting to the Internet and the other connecting to a LAN Hub or switch. Therefore, it is generally set to a default route, as long as it is not an intranet segment, all Forwarding is performed 。

In the Wan project, the Protocol converter is a telecommunications terminal device used at both ends of the Wan line. The conversion is actually in the form of physical interfaces. For example, the SDH line of the Telecom is transmitted to the user in the form of optical fiber, then, the optical terminal is converted into a pair of coaxial (BNC). If the wide-area port of the user's router is in the serial port format (for example, V.35), in order to convert the BNC to the serial port, the Protocol converter is required. That is to say, the input of the Protocol converter is a coaxial cable, while the output is a serial port. Therefore, it should be a physical layer protocol 。

In addition, the Protocol converter generally has a line of physical jumper switch, and its settings (such as the E1 frame format) should be consistent with the telecommunications line. In addition, if the router is considered as a DTE, it is probably a DCE 。

The Protocol converter is divided into two types: GE and GV. Simply put, GE converts 2 m to an Ethernet interface of RJ45, and GV converts 2 m to a V35 interface to connect to the router 。
