Many methods have failed to find online, because most of the methods are installed in MBR, such as GRUB4DOS,EASYBCD. So that even their own doubts Win8 can use hard disk installation, almost to buy a U disk to install, in the plan to give up in the Ubuntu forum to see a sticky post, win8 hard disk installation Speak very detailed, finally in accordance with his method to put Ubuntu up, Now tell me about the pits you encountered in your installation.

To install Ubuntu on a Win8 basis, you have to figure out how Win8 is installed.

Win8 Formal installation methods have 4 kinds, the formal installation of Ubuntu is also the 4 kinds: (Dual-system theory to provide 4*4 type of formal installation mode)

A, Bios+mbr Traditional installation method, see 2 Floor, can also refer to the 3 floor of the rookie special method
B, csm+mbr Note: CSM refers to the UEFI motherboard, and open the CSM, this method feels that Uefi does not exist, see 2 floor, can also refer to the 3 floor of the small white special method
C, csm+gpt This article focuses on the part, the difficulty is not low, rookie please use 3 floor method, top master with 5 floor method
D, pure uefi+gpt Note: pure Uefi refers to the UEFI motherboard, and the CSM is off, or the motherboard does not have CSM, small white please use 3 floor method, top master with 5 floor method

Apple, DELL, HP, ThinkPad and other parts of the model to deal with 16 formal installation methods, provide a strong lineup of hybrid start-up program, including the complete CSM support module, GPT+MBR dual-drive hybrid boot.

The system motherboard looks less functional:
ASUS UEFI Motherboard Z97-deluxe does not offer a-way, only available in B, C, D three ways.
Asrock UEFI motherboard B85 Killer does not offer a-way, only available in B, C, D three ways.
Gigabyte UEFI Motherboard Gs-b85-hd3_v2.1_c does not provide D mode, can provide a, C two ways, features: Gigabyte installation is relatively easy.
MSI UEFI motherboard Z87 MPOWER Max does not offer either B or C, only a, d two way, disadvantage: MSI UEFI installation mode is too difficult.

On the basis of WIN8 on the installation of Ubuntu, the most important thing is: you need to know whether WIN8 is installed on the MBR or on the GPT?

Install the WIN8 on the 5.6.1 Pro or Server edition, you can see the GPT or MBR word as soon as you open it.
A. If the partition assistant finds out that the original WIN8 system disk is installed on the MBR typeface, then it is recommended that Ubuntu install MBR method, see 2 floor. B. If the partition assistant detects that the original WIN8 system disk is installed on the GPT word, then it is recommended that Ubuntu be loaded in GPT mode.

Secondly, on the basis of Win8 installed Ubuntu, you need to know whether the computer itself to turn on the UEFI function? Or simply an older BIOS motherboard.

First Check method: If the original WIN8 system disk is installed on the GPT, then the basic can be confirmed as a UEFI motherboard, and the UEFI feature is turned on.
Second Check method: Further confirm, need to enter the motherboard firmware setting interface, see if it has uefi typeface. If no Uefi typeface is the old BIOS motherboard. If you have a uefi typeface, you'll also need to verify that it has this feature turned on and check that the CSM is turned on.

Critical UEFI Readiness Knowledge

U1: Boot into Windows 8, the first time to turn off fast startup! If you do not close it, loading Ubuntu+win dual system will kill Windows 8. Fedora does not shut down fast Startup, and it blocks NTFS partitions.

U2: Turn off the motherboard fast boot, may be called fast boot or ultra fast, etc., close the Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT)

U3: It is now 2015, and currently more than 90% of discrete graphics cards do not support Uefi GOP.
A. If your standalone video card does not support UEFI, do not close the CSM, otherwise Win8 and Ubuntu will not boot.
B. If your standalone video card does not support UEFI, do not turn on secure boot, otherwise Win8 and Ubuntu will not boot.
This is because UEFI specifies that the CSM and secure boot conflict with each other and cannot be turned on at the same time.

U4:ubuntu official strongly recommends that a single hard drive do not do two EFI partitions (also called ESP partitions), IT is strongly recommended to has only 1 EFI partition per disk.

GPT era hard disk installation ideas preinstalled WIN8 computer without CD-ROM, and determine Win8 built on a pure uefi+gpt mode, and the installer does not have a USB flash drive, directly installed Ubuntu14.04.1 x64

Speaking of my pre-installed environment, install the genuine Windows 8.1 Update x64, please note: When you build a 50G partition, Microsoft will help you build four partitions (in the true pure EFI mode).

STEP1: The first time to turn off fast startup Quick start.

STEP2: Download Ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso, copy it to C drive, GRUB2 theory supports NTFS (to prevent NTFS problems, I delete all disks behind the C drive, create a 2000MB fat format partition, the D drive, and copy the ISO image here).

STEP3: Before the installation, through the AO Mei Division assistant, you can see the C-4,fat format of the D-Row 5th, (the number of the first few can not be viewed through Microsoft's own disk management, because it hides the MSR partition).

STEP4: As an administrator, use the mountvol command to mount the ESP partition and set the EFI partition to M-disk, at which point the ESP partition is still not visible. (Note: If you do not exceed two ESP partitions, you do not need to use DiskPart.) )

Code:

1 mountvol M:/S

STEP5: Open Task Manager--Details, make a note of the Explorer.exe name, select the Explorer and end it.

STEP6: On the Task Manager, run the new Task Explorer, click File, you must tick "system administration permissions", OK, open "This computer" to see the ESP partition. Now that I have write permission, I create a new folder in the EFI directory and it will disappear automatically after the reboot. Please do not delete or replace any files, otherwise, WIN8 will not start.

STEP7: Download the latest Grub2 for Windows 8, unzip it to the C drive and rename it to Grub2

STEP8: Jump to grub2 directory via CD command,

Code:

1 cd C:\GRUB2

STEP9: The installation command part is more difficult, the main reference archlinux Chinese wiki explanation, later, also refer to a worry-free on the method of writing, now use is 1698 write installation method.

More than 90% of the UEFI motherboards are 64-bit firmware, and my motherboard is 64-bit, using the following installation command, M: represents the mounted disk symbol, this method is only available for 64-bit motherboards:

Code:

1 grub-install --target=x86_64-efi--efi-directory=m:--bootloader-ID=boot-- Boot-directory=m:/efi--modules="part_gpt fat normal"

After the command executes successfully, open the ESP partition, you can see the EFI folder more than one Grub folder (need to do a grub.cfg stored here), the boot folder more than a grubx64.efi.

STEP10: Requires manual boot selection menu grub.cfg file because the Windows version is missing Grub-mkconfig.exe this file.

The 10th step, need to manually equipped with boot selection menu Grub.cfg file, storage location see the previous chapter. This thought successful into the GRUB2 Knock two command on the OK, but UEFI installation command is not the same, but also need to consider the problem of graphics card, otherwise, will enter Blind mode dark state!
