The IBM lab says it has broken a speed record for big data, saying its latest signal-switching chip can raise the Internet's speed to 200-400gbps at "very low power".

At a recent San Francisco International Solid State Circuit Conference (ISSCC), IBM researchers submitted a prototype signal converter device containing the chip.

IBM is developing the technology for its own family of products, from fiber optics and fixed-wire communications to advanced radar systems.

"After the first development and testing, our earlier generation of ADC is expected to be listed within 12 months," Schmatz added, noting that the company will develop the technology in communications systems, such as 400Gbps fiber and advanced radar.
