Amazon cloud computing

Amazon's cloud name is Amazon Web Services, which so far consists of four core services: Simple Storage Service (S3), Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Simple Queuing Service and SimpleDB, which is still in the testing phase. In other words, Amazon offers access to networked storage, computer processing, queuing and DBMS access services.

There is a need for these services in a large number of IT infrastructures, and these services are available in Amazon's data centers where users simply pay for the services they consume: for example, every billion bytes of S3 storage per month 15 cents, Elastic Computing cloud server capacity according to the different configuration of 10 to 80 cents per hour.

The first cloud service Amazon introduced was Simple Storage Service S3, which offers unlimited storage of documents, photos, videos and other data. Then came the Elastic Compute Cloud EC2, a computer processing service that lets users choose their own server configuration for on-demand payment.

Why should Amazon fanfare its way into Web services? As the company continues to grow as a leader in e-commerce, Amazon has been investing heavily in deep research and development of expertise in the data center. Many corporate CIOs nowadays want to find an alternative to investing continuously in their in-house data centers, and Amazon takes this as an opportunity to keep funding up by opening up the database to other companies. "Amazon is not a bookstore or retailer, it's at the heart of a technology company, and many people do not understand that," said Adam Selipsky, vice president of Amazon Web Services product management.

Whether individuals or large businesses, developers who use Amazon Web Services can develop and deliver applications on Amazon's infrastructure without requiring configuration software and servers. There are currently more than 370,000 R & D staff are using Amazon Web Services.

The initial market positioning for Amazon Web Services, which is not aimed at large enterprises, has garnered the favor of small and medium-sized businesses at a low price, scalability and flexibility in IT resources. In order to better support large customers, Amazon started 24/7 phone support and enterprise service level agreements. For example, if less than 99.9% availability of the Simple Storage Service (S3) is available within a month, users are entitled to at least 10% rebate payment. Amazon's practice is not trivial, and consumers who visit its site at the moment suffer from a series of hassles of storage loss and delivery delays.

Amazon was not transformed into a software as a service vendor, but other software developers are using Amazon Web Services to develop their own software-as-a-service offerings. These include Vertica, which sells S3-based databases, and Sonian, which creates archival services on Amazon's infrastructure.
