AMD will release the new Opteron 3200 series chips for low-end servers in Tuesday. AMD hopes this will provide it with the advantage of being ahead of Intel in the cloud server market.

According to AMD, three new Opteron 3200 chips will be used for Web site hosting and cloud applications of the single-socket server. These chips are configured with up to 8 processor cores, with a maximum frequency of 3Ghz and a power consumption of 45 to 65 watts.

These new chips will be based on the Bulldozer processor architecture. This architecture is also used for Opteron 6200 16 core processors and FX series game chips. The Opteron 3200 series Chip was released after AMD announced a 334 million dollar takeover of Seamicro company in late February this year. Seamicro provides a dense and energy efficient server for cloud computing environments.

AMD's chips may compete with Intel's Xeon E3 series of chips. Intel's chips are used for Seamicro sm10000-xe servers. Intel cooperates with Seamicro on servers. However, analysts say AMD will eventually replace Intel chips with its own chips.

AMD says the Opteron 3200 Series processor is a product with low cost per core. The chips are priced at 99 to 129 dollars. The Intel Xeon E3 series processors are priced at 189 to 885 USD.

Jim McGregor, chief technology strategist at ISUPPLI, a marketing research firm, said the AMD-extended product line provided a new market entry point. However, Opteron 3200 series chips may not be suitable for server applications if they compete on price rather than per watt performance. There is growing concern about the deployment of Low-power servers in data centers to reduce energy costs. However, the Opteron 3200 series chips have a high power consumption for this application.

McGregor said that the current AMD's micro-server strategy is not clear. However, AMD must quickly establish its foothold in the market.
