&http://www.aliyun.com/zixun/aggregation/37954.html ">NBSP; "were", sometimes referred to as "x64", is one of the 64-bit microprocessor architectures and their corresponding instruction sets, as well as an extension of the Intel x86 architecture. "x64" was first designed by AMD, launched as "AMD64", and subsequently used by Intel, which Intel calls "Intel 64", previously used Clackamas Marvell (CT), ia-32e and Intel. The outside world uses "were" or "x64" to call this 64-bit structure, thus maintains neutrality, does not favour any manufacturer. Debian uses the AMD64 architecture title because it provides Intel's IA-64 architecture support. Ubuntu inherits this name from Debian.

Most computers since 2005 are 64-bit. Capable of running 64-bit mode processors have AMD's Fast Dragon X64,fx,x2,intel Itanium and Xeon, intel's Core2, Pentium D, Pentium 4 and Celeron D part models. AMD processors that support AMD64, and Intel processors that support Intel, can run in 64-bit mode.

What about the "G5" PowerPC chip? or Sprc64,mips64 and so on? (Hint: Linux can run almost anything:)

The so-called 32-bit and 64-bit, actually refers to the size (or width) of the computer's storage registers. The byte width of a 32-bit computer is 32 bits, and it has a very high addressing capability (4GB of physical memory). The ability to address a 64-bit computer is amazing.

We are stepping into a time when information is stored in TB units. Some computers will be able to store several years of your favorite TV program. When we want to move such a large amount of data and compress it to more efficiently store the data, we need the power of the 64-bit processor.

The 64-bit processor represents the future. It is worth mentioning that AMD's 64-bit processor works well in 32-bit environments. One might suggest continuing to use 32-bit software because 32-bit software is better supported. But things are changing. We can imagine that more computers will be 64 in 10 years, but there is reason to think that most people will have two other computers in this time period (every five years).

The problem is that it's not important for free software. Software code can be transferred, because the use of the source code, so most software is "good". Unfortunately, it's actually a bit of a hassle to convert some programs from 32 bits to 64 bits, so some programs can't run in real 64-bit mode. These programs can work in simulated mode, but slightly more slowly. Some code actually runs even slower in 64-bit environments due to the subtle differences in the processor.

If you use a processor that supports AMD64 or Intel, 64-bit mode may be slightly more efficient than 32-bit mode. The reason for this is that the processor is available in 64-bit mode with more registers and a wider number of digits, which means that programs compiled for 64-bit mode can run more efficiently.

Run 32-bit programs on 64-bit machines

Currently, users with 64-bit processors can also install 32-bit Ubuntu systems. Not all software is available in 64-bit environments, and in particular, non-free programs are usually 32-bit.

Some programs can run under 64-bit Ubuntu, but use 32-bit libraries. You can use sudo and apt to install these libraries.

sudo apt install ia32-libs*

You can also install 32-bit libraries with the newly-established package manager. Another option is to use Chroot to create a 32-bit environment.
