Cloud computing cannot ignore bandwidth issues

If an enterprise wants to turn to cloud computing, it will more or less need to change the enterprise network bandwidth. Most businesses choose cloud computing as the simplest cloud storage solution with data protection, the problem is whether the enterprise's existing bandwidth can support the huge data flow required for cloud storage.

There are already a number of cloud storage solution devices with data protection capabilities. For example, CommVault's Simpana cloud storage integration program. This scenario allows administrators to transfer data that needs to be protected to a selected set of cloud storage vendors.

The idea seems pretty good, but the question is, how much does an enterprise spend to establish a connection between a local and a cloud storage provider? Although the data is backed up and encrypted, does the existing connection enable the Enterprise to transmit the required data to the cloud service provider?

A friend of mine in the blogosphere, ethereal Mind's Greg Ferro, recently posted a post on Twitter that validates one of my suspicions. Greg concludes in his blog that the cloud solution he is in touch with is a little more expensive than the storage solution the customer had previously done in his own company. Although each vendor's cloud solution is different, I still think of bandwidth problems. For the current network situation, most enterprises export bandwidth of 50 trillion or 100 trillion is more than sufficient. But if you add the amount of data stored in the cloud, everything will change.

Further, how do we solve the initial load? Not all enterprise data in the cloud storage after the building is built from zero, but at the beginning there is a huge amount of data need to store. Combining various factors, the initial data that the general enterprise needs to keep is calculated in TB.

Taking into account the various factors, whether to adopt cloud storage needs to think twice. Retiring all tape devices is certainly a good thing. But it depends on how the enterprise intends to handle its own static data, whether the cloud storage can meet the enterprise's data processing requirements. After all, if the enterprise is currently storing tapes in an external Data warehouse and cannot personally reach the onsite processing tape device, the same can not be done by cloud storage vendors.
