In a service-oriented architecture, testing does not save application uptime. Yes, the runtime process and the environment must be tested, but developers can benefit greatly by looking at the capabilities of the service in a subtle way. A common problem is that the culprit that can hinder service performance is the attachment. Transferring large files is a chronic problem that has plagued the IT community for years. The problem could get worse because cloud computing provides seemingly limitless resources on demand, says Frank Kenney, Gartner research director. "When we start using more cloud-based services, the problem will continue to deteriorate because we need to deal with larger data, larger attachments," Kenney said, "but we want to get the same performance in a maintainable situation." "Historically, most applications have adopted a more transactional architecture in which transmission occurs in small bursts. Now, Kenney says, the industry is working to get applications to continuously transmit data in real time. This concern is a selling point for SOA test makers, and Crosscheck NX has already shown the relevant products. Their Soapsonar provides a set of tools for functional, performance, compliance, and security testing. In the most recently released version 5, the product added support for WS and large file stream testing. Crosscheck's CEO, Mamoon Yunus, suggests that FTP is no longer popular in terms of file transfers. Web services transport systems, such as MIME, have become more common, but file size growth is expected to grow faster than many participating SOA vendors. "In addition, companies have begun to move to integrate part of their customers ' infrastructure with the enterprise itself." "SOA has been very focused on the interior, but now companies are adding their trading partners to their integration plans," says Yunus. They are realizing that the first thing in value is how to trust who will get your Web service. The more external access you have to your system, the greater the likelihood of an attack source and a data injection mutation. ”
