Within less than two months of Citrix turning its cloudstack into an Open-source Apache project, cloud providers are beginning to support this open source model.
This week, for example, Zenoss company, which produces software that helps companies monitor and control data center functionality, adds Cloudstack support to its products. Floyd Strimling, head of cloud technology at Zenoss Company, said the company had started supporting cloudstack based on customer feedback.
"We see a lot of end users using Cloudstack," he says. "He saw most of the cloudstack deployed in social media and gaming companies, and they wanted to build a structure similar to Zynga, and Zynga built its own cloud and data center architecture away from its reliance on Amazon cloud services."
When Citrix turned its cloudstack into an Apache open source project to create a model that could contend with OpenStack (another Open-source cloud project), it split the open source cloud market. Cloudstack tries to differentiate itself from OpenStack by its compatibility with Amazon, but OpenStack officials say they also have Amazon compatibility.
Strimling said he supported the two projects, saying that Cloudstack is more mature and more usable than the OpenStack open source cloud model. He says OpenStack needs to deploy more development and customization work, "OpenStack is still largely in the development community stage, and I think it needs to nurture a user community." ”
However, OpenStack has some large vendor users. Rackspace, HP, Dell and Piston cloud computing are all dedicated to using OpenStack to launch cloud products. At this week's interop conference, OpenStack supporters are promoting their popularity. Rackspace chief technology officer John Engates says OpenStack is about to become the dominant Open-source model through its latest version of software, Essex.
He points out that Rackspace has turned its internal data center into a framework for almost full use of OpenStack, one of OpenStack's largest deployments. IBM and Red Hat have recently indicated that they will support OpenStack.
In fact, OpenStack and Cloudstack are "young" and no one has a stronger momentum than the other, Puppet Labs chief executive Luke Kanies said.
"The game is far from over," he says. "Puppet built open source infrastructure management software and worked with customers who deployed OpenStack and Cloudstack and other Open-source and proprietary cloud products, such as eucalyptus, Amazon, and even platform Cloudfoundry.
In Strimling's view, Cloudstack has a more mature feature set, Kanies says it's the only thing to look forward to. Cloudstack is modeled after Cloud.com,citrix acquired Cloud.com and then turned it into an open source project, where the system's production deployment already exists. And OpenStack is basically a project that started just two years ago, "when people think about cloud computing, they associate Amazon with the public, and they associate VMware with the private cloud," he says. "We are still in the early stages of open source development." "(邹铮 compiled)
