Times weekly reporter Li Yu atlas communication with computers, two industries, brings both opportunities and challenges, as it is for Qualcomm and Intel. Now that Intel is going into the field of Qualcomm-led mobile chips, Qualcomm extends its chip products to the netbook sector. September 15, the Qualcomm company Greater China President Meng in the interview with The Times weekly reporter, facing the answer to the "competition with Intel" related issues. Confronting Intel's competitive times: Industry generally believes that Qualcomm and Intel will inevitably have a fight, what do you think of this problem? Intel is working with Nokia, and Qualcomm, is there a plan to work with companies in the computer industry? Mengpo: It can be said to be a battle. Intel began to make WCDMA chips in 2001, and it was unsuccessful and Intel sold it to someone else. Now, Intel is working with Nokia to demonstrate that it wants to re-enter the field of mobile communications. For Qualcomm, we've always wanted to make a product like a mobile phone and a computer. So, whether Qualcomm, or Intel, is to adapt to the development of mobile Internet, for our manufacturers, customers to provide better products, so that they can design a better terminal. Times Weekly: In the netbook market, Intel occupies an absolute leading position, where is Qualcomm's advantage? Mengpo: Traditionally, cell phone chips are based on ARM architecture. The ARM architecture and Intel X86 are two different camps. There is a fundamental difference between Qualcomm and Intel's netbooks, first of all, the high power consumption of high pass chips is very low, and secondly, communication chips are inherently based on communication networks. If the user is using a netbook based on the Intel Atom platform, the 3G will require a separate module to go up, which is an essential difference. Times Weekly: The industry has high hopes for low power chips based on ARM architecture, even as a challenger to break the Wintel dominance. Is that what you think? Mengpo: Not the same industry operating mode is not the same, but the current trend is the integration of all industries. Now, many manufacturers in the arm architecture hope to do some differentiated products, there are some new expectations. I have seen many manufacturers of new products, very creative, I think, in the next 6-12 months, you will find a lot of such products in the market. This is arm's architecture to help them do, X86 can not do. Times Weekly: Qualcomm based on the arm architecture of the chip-snapdragon the introduction of the smart book, whether it can bring different experiences to consumers? MENGPO: Qualcomm Push the Smart book, is the use of ARM architecture than the lower power consumption, indeed, like a mobile phone can be used for a long time, do not need to recharge, and another is it "forever online" ability, do not need to open like a laptop to start a half-day, and the interface is Windows. Smart Ben can also let different manufacturers have their own innovation, such as some people choose the Linux operating system, and some with Windows CE do, now many peopleUsing Google's Android, and possibly Google Chrome, will be a new experience. In addition, a lot of smart phone application experience, especially the iphone experience, can be reflected in the smart book, which may be the difference between us and Intel Netbook. 4G Standard October published times weekly: The communications industry is concerned about the development of 4G, you expect the 4G standard will be determined? What is the standard? Mengpo: This year is the submission deadline for 4G of various technical solutions, and many countries will submit a 4G solution at the ITU meeting in late October this year. The industry usually calls LTE 4G, but LTE itself is not a 4G solution. Now, lte+ or LTE Advanced, whatever the name, is some of the enhancements on LTE, presumably as a 4G standard proposal. Times Weekly: LTE technology is progressing very quickly, but there are few LTE terminals. What is the progress of Qualcomm on LTE chips? When can LTE chips be commercially available? MENGPO: Qualcomm's first LTE chip will be available in September, the world's number one, but this is just engineering samples. From the engineering samples to the advent of commercial chips, there is still a process, it is not sure when to be commercially available. Times Weekly: 3G new changes, new trends in Qualcomm's business in China will have any impact? Mengpo: No. Qualcomm in mobile communications technology, more of its own research and development. But in the chip business, we comply with industry needs, especially the future needs of products. Because a chip from the start to the commercial, usually 18-24 months, all of these chips are not Qualcomm closed their own research. Many chips can be seen on the Qualcomm's product evolution map, and are basically based on the needs of the operators. Time Weekly: What is the main direction of development for Qualcomm in the future? MENGPO: Qualcomm continues to emphasize the "converged" solution, which represents the convergence of mobile communications, broadband Internet and it technology. Qualcomm's Snapdragon already has a GHz-level processing chip, low power and high computational power, hoping to help the industry make more innovations in broadband mobile internet products.
