European cloud markets thaw, OpenStack most popular

Although the development of Europe's cloud computing infrastructure lags behind that of North America, the market is heating up recently.

According to Jonathan Bryce, executive director of the OpenStack Foundation, the global popularity of OpenStack has accelerated over the past six months, with European and Asian markets particularly prominent:

OpenStack's business applications in Europe and Asia are growing, compared with the US market, which is more willing to try early technology.

Because it is open source software, the actual growth rate of OpenStack users is not yet accurate data, but some heavyweight user support is enough to explain everything. CERN (European Centre for Nuclear Research) is one of them. Although CERN and two other European research institutions have created a public cloud--helix Nebula, also known as the Science Cloud, CERN has never abandoned its deployment of OpenStack, and CERN is now planning to launch a OpenStack private cloud containing 150,000 virtual machines.

Deutsche Telekom's Opentstack pilot has also been in operation for more than a year, starting in March this year, when Deutsche Telekom began to provide security services based on OpenStack (and ClearPath). This summer, Deutsche Telekom plans to move more applications to the OpenStack cloud computing environment. In addition, the two major cloud services in France Cloudwatt and Numergy also adopted the OpenStack.

Mark Collier, chief operating officer of the OpenStack Foundation, argues that for European users the technical challenge of deploying OpenStack is the same as that of North American users, and the main driver of OpenStack's warming in the European cloud computing market is the focus on data jurisdiction. In France, for example, there are many regulations and incentives that require the deployment of a local cloud at the location of the data.

Although Europe's cloud computing has been slow due to tougher regulations and privacy concerns, the European cloud computing market has recently begun to thaw, but it is noteworthy that four open source cloud platforms (OpenStack, Cloudstack, Eucalyptus and Opennebula) are greatly different in popularity.
