Backup services: Official release of Windows Azure backup service

Today, we release Windows Azure's backup service as a general available service. This version is now in the production phase, based on enterprise service level agreements, backed by Microsoft support and ready for production.

Windows Azure Backup is a cloud that is backed up for Windows Server solutions to prevent data loss, allowing backups of files and folders, recovering from the cloud, and providing offsite protection against data loss. This service enables IT administrators and developers to choose to back up and protect critical data in a way that is easy to recycle from anywhere without upfront hardware costs.

Windows Azure Backup is built on the Windows Azure platform and uses Windows Azure blobs to store customer data. Windows Server uses the downloadable Windows Azure backup agent to securely and efficiently transfer file and folder data to Windows Azure backup service. In addition to providing cloud backup for Windows Server, the Windows Azure Backup service also provides the ability to back up data to the cloud from System Center Data Protection Management and Windows Server Essentials.

All data is encrypted and then sent to the cloud, and the customer retains and manages the encryption key (which means that the data store is completely confidential and is not decrypted by anyone except yourself).

Started

Before you start using Windows Azure Backup service, you first need to create a new backup library within the Windows Azure Management portal. Do this by clicking the new-> Data Service-> recovery service-> Backup library:

Once the backup library is created, you will see a simple tutorial that will help guide you through how to register your Windows server with it:

Once the server you want to back up is registered, you can configure a scheduled backup using the appropriate local management interface (such as the System Center Data Protection Manager console or Windows Server Essentials Dashboard) in the Microsoft Management Console snap-in. and selectively initiate recovery. For more information on how to do this, you can follow these tutorials:

tutorial:schedule Backups Using The Windows Azure backup Agent This tutorial can help you set up a backup schedule for your registered Windows server. It also describes how to use the Windows PowerShell cmdlet to set up a custom backup schedule. Tutorial:recover Files and Folders using the Windows Azure backup Agent This tutorial can help you recover data with backup. It also describes how to do the same task using the Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

The following are some of the key benefits of Windows Azure Backup services:

Simple configuration and management. To provide a seamless backup and restore to a local disk, or to the cloud, Windows Azure's backup service integrates Windows Server backup capabilities in Windows Server, as well as System Center and Windows Server Essentials Data Protection Manager component. Block-level incremental backups. The Windows Azure backup agent reduces storage and bandwidth utilization by tracking changes to files and data blocks and by transferring only changing blocks of data. Real-time versions of backups at different times are used to save space efficiently by storing the change blocks between these versions. Data compression, encryption, and throttling. Windows Azure Backup agent ensures that data is compressed and encrypted on the server before it is sent over the network to the Windows Azure backup service. Therefore, the Windows Azure backup service stores only encrypted data in the cloud. The encryption key is a backup service that is not provided to Windows Azure, so the data will not be decrypted on the service. In addition, when backing up and storing information, users can set limits and configure how Windows Azure Backup service leverages network bandwidth. Data integrity validation is available in the cloud. In addition to the data security backup, once the data backup is complete, the integrity checks of the backed-up data are automatically performed. As a result, any damage caused by data transmission can easily be identified and repaired automatically. A configurable retention policy that stores data in the cloud. The Windows Azure Platform backup service accepts and implements retention policies to reclaim backups that exceed the range of required reserves to meet business policy and manage backup costs.

Hyper-V Recovery manager: Now available in Public preview

I am pleased to announce a new Windows Azure service in the public preview version-Hyper-V Recovery Manager (HRM) in Windows Azure.

Windows Azure's Hyper-V recovery management arranges for replication and recovery of System Center Virtual Machine Manager SP1 and System Center Virtual Machine in a secondary location Manager2012 R2 Private Cloud to protect your business's critical services. With automatic protection, continuous asynchronous replication, and ordered recovery, the Hyper-V Recovery Manager service can help you achieve disaster recovery and storage of important services in a minimal amount of downtime.

Application data in a Hyper-V Recovery Manager scenario is always transmitted in your internal deployment replication channel. Only metadata (such as logical clouds, virtual machines, networks, etc.) is required for business processes to be sent to Azure. All communications from Azure to traffic need to be encrypted.

Now you can click the new-> Data Services-> Recovery Services-> Hyper-V Recovery manager in the Windows Azure Management portal and start using the Hyper-V recovery feature in Windows Azure. You can write a 9-part series from Brad Anderson: transform the data center to read more about Hyper-V's recovery manager information for Windows Azure. To learn more about setting up the recovery manager for Hyper-V, follow our detailed step-by-step instructions.
