In the Fortune 100, each member is a customer of VMware, even the competitor Microsoft. But according to Gartner's latest Magic Quadrant series of reports, VMware is no longer the only lead vendor in the x86 virtualization marketplace.

Last year, VMware was the only leader, with a wide gap in its competitors. But according to a Gartner survey last week, Microsoft and Citrix and VMware are both in the lead manufacturer's list.

Gartner says VMware ranked first in three virtualization leaders, with Microsoft and Citrix among the 二、三位. But given that Microsoft's Hyper-V and Citrix XenServer are relatively inexpensive, this is an important reason for VMware customers to opt for Hyper-V and XenServer. Oracle and Red Hat were rated niche Player in the Gartner rankings (meaning technology and market positions).

VMware remains the largest market-share manufacturer. But Microsoft's market share has grown (especially for midsize enterprise customers), while Citrix leverages its desktop virtualization advantages and free xenserver to increase their share of the server virtualization market. Gartner analyst Thomas Bittman and his colleagues said.

Although VMware says their management software is stronger. But Microsoft is steadily improving its capabilities, including real-time migrations and excess application memory. The Brocade company case is to deploy both Hyper-V and VMware. The brocade company has previously announced that Citrix's XenServer has the necessary security requirements for virtualization and can be applied in practice.

In the 2010 Magic Quadrant Series report, Gartner reported that Microsoft's mistake was that it was not sufficiently innovative and responsive in a rapidly changing market. Microsoft's desire to become a virtualization leader still requires a greater understanding of market needs and continued improvement in product strategy and technological innovation.

As can be seen in Gartner's report last week, the situation in the virtualization market has changed. With hypervisor and infrastructure management, Microsoft has shortened the technology gap with VMware (primarily advanced management and automation tools).

At the same time, Citrix uses desktop virtualization technology to turn itself into a third-ranked manufacturer in the virtualization market, and to take a firm footing. But Citrix has struggled to turn the XenServer free version into a fee-based version. The virtualization partnership between Citrix and Microsoft presents a confusing situation for customers and partners.

Gartner says that while VMware continues to lead in the x86 server virtualization market, the growth of Hyper-V market share will hit VMware. At each summer's VMworld convention, Microsoft and VMware are filled with gunpowder, and Gartner's endorsement gives Microsoft more impetus.
