Many web sites are now being produced and managed using a database based content management system (CMS). The beneficial side of the CMS is that when you have thousands of pages, you don't have to make HTML pages on one page, but there are some disadvantages to CMS.

What bothers us most about today's content management Systems (CMS) is the lack of SEO (search engine Optimization) functionality. This SEO does not refer to the ability to provide only meta keywords, which is now useless.

We have been very patient waiting for an SEO function can be similar to the static HTML Web page to achieve the same effect of the CMS system appears. There is no doubt that the manual web site can be completed, for each page or even the HTML tags in each page control. But it is impossible to build large-scale websites entirely by hand. Therefore, SEO need a slightly cooperative point (for SEO) CMS system.

Then, choose a CMS, at least what SEO function? Thanks for asking, here are some SEO functions that I would like to have in the CMS, which is divided into necessary, important and optional categories.

Required CMS features

URLs have no parameters and session IDs (session IDs)-The parameters used in the URL to distinguish between the user's conversation ID and the tracking browse path are fatal to SEO. Usually such URLs will bring incomplete indexing and cause the search engine to think that your pages are duplicate content.

H1 Tags-unable to set H1 label is bad. Too many H1 labels on a single page are bad. Use H1 tags for irrelevant information (such as article release dates, etc.). In general, the title of the article is the best content to use the H1 tag.

Customizable URL architecture-if the CMS default URL schema does not fit your needs, you should be able to modify it. For example, you do not want to archive articles on the Web site with/archives/such words, you should be able to remove. Or you want to change the URL of the article from a simple number to the name of the article, you should also be able to do.

301 Redirect to important URLs-now, duplicate content is a big problem for many dynamic webmasters. Therefore, can automatically through the CMS to handle redirection is a necessary function.

Important CMS Features

Static URL-web crawler (spider, robot) favorite is those who appear to be static Web site, that is, the Web site has no dynamic parameters.

URLs with keywords-including keywords in your Web site can help improve your site's ranking. If your CMS does not support customizable URLs (you can include keywords in the URL instead of just displaying the article ID on the URL), it would be very unpleasant to miss out on the out-of-the-box search engine optimization opportunities.

RSS feeds-Providing RSS feeds is essential if you want to share through blogs, newsletters (newsletter) to the coolest and most in Web 2.0 crowd. It is also best to have FeedBurner (which may be a domestic shrimp, fresh fruit or Youdao) integration function that can improve the subscriber of your RSS feeds.

Ping function-This allows Google blog search engine (Baidu blog search, Feedsky, etc.) to know the new content you have released as soon as possible, so that they can crawl your latest RSS feed.

tags and tag clouds-the Web 2.0 feature is a powerful Search engine optimization tool, thanks in large part to the keyword-rich text links. This is the opportunity to rebuild your internal link structure, as well as the tools that you don't have to completely adjust your pages to sort and organize the PageRank flow of pages.

Individually customizable heading tags (title) and H1 tags-each title tag should be separated from the post/article/product title. The H1 label is the same. This anchor text can be varied and can be different from the title tag and the H1 label. So you can H1 tags and title tags using other keywords (synonyms etc)-without worrying about being considered overly seo!

Multi-level classification structure-if a CMS does not allow you to have nested subcategories or grandchild categories on your site, that will be a formidable constraint on your site's internal architecture and multi-tier categorization.

Typical (preferred, Canonical) tags-although I do not believe that Google always reliably adhere to and read this new tag, but it is worthwhile to have this feature, if necessary can be applied immediately.

Want CMS features

Piecemeal excerpt-The repetitive content of dynamic Web sites is becoming more and more problematic, for example, in blogs where the same content is both a fixed-link page and a classified page, an archive page, a tab, and a home page. A uniform and unique excerpt of the content, and only on a permanently linked page display will help the search engine make the Permanent link page the only content.

Web site's breadcrumbs (Breadcrumb) navigation-by using text-linked breadcrumbs, you'll strengthen the hierarchy of links within your site, and hopefully these links are rich in keywords.

Title tags can be automatically generated by a flexible rule-if the title tag is always styled with your site name plus a colon plus the article name (site name: article name), you're screwed at least in terms of search engine optimization. You should be able to modify the rules used to generate the entire site's title tags to make them more SEO-optimized.

Meta-tag description based on page page-a big problem with dynamic Web sites is that all pages use the same page description tag. This page can cause duplicate content issues.

Add NOINDEX tags to low value pages-even if you add nofollow links to these pages, others may still link to these pages and generate the risk of ranking the pages in the rankings (Pagerank) above your more valuable pages.

Keyword-rich introductory text in article classification and label classification pages-a keyword-laden introductory text helps build a stable subject/page with keywords, rather than highlighting these keywords on the page with only the latest articles, products or blog posts.

Broken links nofollows Control-If your site allows users to "comment on content", your site will attract spam comments and links if you do not use the links in nofollow these comments. Gee, you may be a spam magnet anyway, it's just bad for you no nofollows. In addition, no matter how you pagerank the site page design, standing in the search engine optimization position, you should be able to selectively determine the internal pages of your site PageRank delivery.

Customizable navigation link Anchor text-"Contact", "About Us", "Learn More", "all articles" and so on are bad anchor text (at least from the SEO standpoint). Hopefully your CMS can improve this situation and let the anchor text display the appropriate keyword-rich text.

Bulk editing or bulk uploading (or both)-it is inefficient to edit each page only. Conversely, by using Excel or a batch editing interface to bulk modify titles, H1 tags, filenames, and even descriptive meta tags are best (such as WordPress's can bulk modify the title tag plugin).

Public declaration keywords-when you've decided on your key keywords, you should be able to keep this vital information out of the way to prevent competitors from prying eyes. This means that keywords should not be placed anywhere in the HTML, including meta tags, because all resourceful competitors use "view page source code." It's best to put it in the database and use the CMS Admin interface to set it up.

Auto 301 Redirect Previous versions of URLs-imagine updating the URL of a permanent link or product page for a previous page multiple times. If you are not careful, each previous version of the URL may be considered by the search engine as a duplicate of the page. Why should we worry about this, let the CMS to "worry about" it.

Google Product Search Feed-If your CMS provides online directory sites, then this feature is for you. It can save a lot of time. If you are an online retailer and have not submitted to Google Base, heed this reminder: Ignoring Google's product search (formerly Froogle) is dangerous!

Optional CMS features

XML Sitemaps Builder-an XML sitemap can be submitted to the main search engine to improve the status of the page being crawled, but if you have a search engine friendly CMS, usually this is not much needed; Search engines usually crawl themselves and find URLs on your site. Google will use your sitemaps file as a reference to the hierarchy, if your CMS does not produce duplicate pages I hope you do not need to use it.

XHTML Validation-When you enter your content, the ideal CMS automatically checks out HTML code that does not conform to the Web-site logo, because the search engine "sees" pages that may not be the same as the pages that appear on the screen, they may end up crawling a page.

Pingbacks, references, comments and anti-spam mechanisms-with Pingbacks, quotes, comments The attendant problem is that they are very likely to be the carrier of spam, so if you have these features (comments/references/Pingbacks), you should have a mechanism to prevent spam. Effective prevention of spam (such as Akismet, defensio, mollom) is necessary.
