Insufficient cloud architecture design

As David Linthicum, an enterprise architecture expert, points out: The cloud computing challenges that enterprise system architects today face are actually not that different from the architectural issues we've been facing for more than a decade. The advent of service-oriented provides a way to maximize the use and re-use of system resources, and SOA is closely tied to the Web collaboration and the cloud-based collaboration that, according to Linthicum, is an extension of the core SOA concepts.

In June 2011, David Linthicum participated in the "Cloud Data Integration Processing Challenge" topic at SearchSOA's Virtual Event "SOA in Action, Controlling SOA, Integration and Cloud" and participated in a panel discussion on "Where the Cloud Makes Errors" discuss. The main topic of this discussion, as its name suggests, is about the problems organizations face when implementing new cloud technologies as part of their IT infrastructure. In the following summary of SOA in Action, David Linthicum answered Jack Vaughan, SearchSOA.com site editor, for questions about where cloud computing implementations capsize in a corporate ambitious architecture.

SearchSOA.com:David, Where is the cloud easy to make mistakes?

David Linthicum: One of the biggest issues that may go wrong in the cloud is the architectural plan. I think people who are not planning how to implement a cloud within their business can be in big trouble, whether they are public, private, or hybrid.

Therefore, you have to get involved in cloud computing, you have to consider architecture issues. Often, I have to implement this architecture in a more service-oriented way. This is one of the biggest problems I see making mistakes in the cloud right now.

Sometimes, when I go to many businesses, I find that they do not have long-term solutions to how to use the cloud, how to migrate to the cloud computing environment, how to choose the right system to migrate to the cloud, and how to choose the correct migration and switching routes Plan and think through. So they made a lot of mistakes, done a lot of rework and modification, natural overhead expensive. In the end, we moved to the cloud to be more effective and efficient.

Second, people are not thinking about performance. The cloud does not always provide the best performance, whether you believe it or not. Indeed, the scalability of the cloud is very strong, which can take hours of queries on the local system and may take only a few minutes in the cloud. However, if you port a very interactive application to the cloud and the application needs to communicate with the client, its performance will be hard to come by due to delays in communication.

Another factor to consider is cost. Clouds are not always the most cost-effective, whether private, public or hybrid. So you have to calm down and carefully analyze the cloud business model for each specific issue for each business. You need to figure out what kind of business problem you expect to solve and then figure out what the real costs are and what the real savings can be when migrating to a cloud computing environment.

One of the things that I often urge people to think about right now is the value cloud-agility has to business, that is, the ability to change the business process to fit the needs of the business and change in near real-time. In the end, this may be the greater value of the cloud.

I've already talked about other issues as well. Security is always a problem, however, I think if you add some security plans in cloud computing, then there is no problem. If you plan carefully, it is entirely possible that you can make your cloud computing system as secure or even safer as the internal systems you see on weekdays.

Therefore, people are prone to two types of mistakes. In the cloud, one of the mistakes is that the cloud can do so much, so they throw all their tasks onto the cloud and often disappoint them. The other is that the cloud can not do anything, and there are security issues and control issues, so they will not use the cloud, can not take advantage of this technology. Both of these ideas have problems and will not work.

Our existing internal systems and the many problems that exist and occur when building these systems actually apply to the cloud as well. I think we can move faster.
