According to foreign media reports, Microsoft Windows Server Department executives confirmed in Wednesday, although Microsoft's next generation of Windows operating system, Windows 8 will support the ARM processor architecture, but it does not intend to develop a new version of the ARM architecture of the Windows Server System.

Bill Laing, vice president of Microsoft's server and cloud division, Billa Some of the features of the Windows Server 8 system at the Microsoft Build Congress this week. A new generation of server operating systems adds a number of features, such as the addition of a command-line based PowerShell function, allowing administrators to manage multiple devices, and a unified management platform behind servers and cloud resources.

However, unlike Windows 8 systems, the Windows Server 8 system does not provide arm versions of the product. Asked whether Microsoft was developing a Windows Server 8 system based on ARM architecture, the company replied: "The arm version of the Windows Server 8 system will not be developed in the near future." ”

With more and more hardware vendors applying ARM's low-power processors to mobile devices, ARM processors have grown considerably in recent years. Industry observers believe that ARM chips also apply to the data center environment. Arm even began to investigate the possibility of developing a server chip based on ARM architecture.

But even if you can produce such a chip, it still needs to be supported by the Windows Server operating system.

The biggest problem now, Telaim says, is that the Windows server system is written for a 64-bit processor, but the current arm architecture is limited to 32-bit processing technology. Windows Server 2008 no longer supports 32-bit technology for a second upgrade. In addition, running Windows Server on the ARM architecture is no good. The server-based arm architecture seems to save power to the server, but in fact it has very little impact on energy consumption.

Telaim did not say that Microsoft would never consider developing a Windows Server system based on the arm architecture, but said the company does not currently have plans to do so.
