Imagine if a device could immediately detect that you were involved in a drug trade, or had recently fired a gun, or hidden something in your clothes. It sounds like a very it feeling. But this is not the case, it is only a U.S. Homeland Security department recently launched a testing equipment. The scanner developed by Genia Photonics looks a bit like an old-fashioned radio.
It works like this--first, it emits lasers into the distance, sends the data back to the computer, and then analyzes the wavelength and pattern of the data. This means that it does not detect a simple test of whether you have a gun hidden, but it can track you if you have been poisoned, and even detect how many hairs you have.
Unlike the scanners and metal detectors we see at the airport, the molecular scanners developed by Genia Photonics do not require you to stand there waiting for scanners to scan or walk through a test door. So you're disappointed to avoid a scan. On the one hand, the scanner runs much faster than the average scanner. On the other hand, its scanning range is very large, about 164 feet.
While it is not yet clear whether research in this area is beneficial to us, it has to be mentioned that it will put our privacy at risk. Perhaps, in the near future, you may be scanned in the bathroom.
