When a big client wants to continue to invest more in your company, that's a good sign, and that's what the database start-up NuoDB is going through today, announcing the 14.2 million-dollar financing. Dassault Systèmes, Europe's second-largest software company (after SAP), has a strong interest in NuoDB and has been an investor. Dassault is a supplier of development tools for the 3D printing industry. Rather than letting customers run their software in their own data centers, Dassault would like to offer their products to customers as cloud services.
Barry Morris, founder and CEO of NuoDB, said in an interview with VentureBeat: "We're going to make Dassault more cloud-computing, And it has the same user experience as Salesforce.com, where users can log in to an account and start designing a house, a pair of running shoes, whatever it is, to connect directly to the 3D printer ... ”
Morris said: "Dassault want its services to run on the cloud, engineers are also trying to find a suitable database for this cloud service, and NuoDB just meet this requirement." Unlike other relational databases, NuoDB can extend the database by adding more servers without having to upgrade the host, a design that is reliable for applications deployed in the cloud and, above all, nuodb prices are cheaper than Oracle relational databases. ”
The database market has grown in recent years, as startups such as NuoDB are developing rapidly because they are different from traditional relational database vendors, Oracle, IBM, and SAP. Other potential database start-ups include Memsql, Redislaps, RETHINKDB, and Cloudant, which have just been acquired by IBM.
The focus of these companies is different, the NuoDB goal is transactional, which means it can handle the reading and writing of mission-critical data and can be maintained, and it supports SQL query language-unlike today's very hot NoSQL database company MongoDB.
Many people see NuoDB as a newsql product, but it's hard for Morris to define NUODB with SQL. NuoDB, he says, is not a progressive outcome of technological evolution, but a revolutionary product that is a model for future databases.
Michael Stonebraker, chief technology officer at VOLTDB, a distributed database company, says NoSQL databases offer good scalability and flexibility, but they also have their own shortcomings. Because the Sql,nosql database system is not used, it does not have the characteristics of highly structured queries. NoSQL other issues include the inability to provide acid (atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability), and the different NoSQL databases have their own query language, making it difficult to standardize application interfaces.
NuoDB has redefined the relational database technology, which is designed for the elastic cloud system rather than the stand-alone system, so it can be regarded as a multi-user, flexible, on-demand distributed relational database management system. NuoDB features include: the ability to arbitrarily add and subtract inexpensive hosts, to achieve on-demand shared resources, to provide different business continuity, performance and configuration methods to greatly reduce the cost of database operation and maintenance.
NuoDB is located in Boston, the company now has about 40 employees, founded in 2008, a year later to the market to launch their own database. The company plans to expand its workforce to 60 or more, and most new hires will focus on sales and marketing.
