British university studies three-dimensional body measurement technology, photo-measuring measurements
Online shopping makes it easier to buy clothes, but buyers can only approximate the correct size. This leads to constant returns, frustrating users and wasting resources. The London Institute of Fashion (Eton of Fashion) and the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom (University of Surrey), with the help of a number of professional companies, have conducted a study that will address this problem with new three-dimensional body-measuring techniques.
This project is called "body shape recognition for online shopping fashion" (Recognition for online Fashion). It needs to install a software on the home computer and require the user to enter the correct height. Customers then take pictures in their underwear, using a computer camera or smartphone. The software can be used to calculate the relevant detailed measurement values based on these photos. These photos are kept on the user's own computer without uploading to the Internet.
The team envisions that the site that supports the technology will display a logo or pop-up page to the customer after the measurement process is completed, making it easy to match the correct size.
"The fashion industry and the customers will benefit a lot," said Philip Delamore of the London Fashion Institute (Philippe Dramor). At the moment, online shoppers often buy multiple sizes of the same item at the same time, because they are not sure what size suits them. ”
The specifics of the system's work are unclear, but the team revealed that EA game "Sims" used the technology to make real-life displays based on software. At present, they focus on the introduction of a complete product within two years. To this end, the team is working with the body measurement specialist Bodymetrics and digital creative agency guided cooperation.
The project was funded by the British Government's Council for Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPSRC) 350,000 pounds. However, this is not the only one of these projects. The fits.me and verisize projects have the same goal.
