Peng: How to look at cloud computing as a grid (version 0.1)

Cloud computing is known as "cloud", probably because one of the originator of cloud computing, Amazon, has taken a new name, "Elastic Computing Cloud" (EC2), and achieved commercial success.

At that time, the grid has gone through the course of 10 years, we have an aesthetic fatigue, the new name is refreshing, and thus quickly accepted. In fact, from 2003 onwards, IBM, SUN, HP and so on have been offered like buying electricity to buy water through a network to buy computing power and storage space services [1][2], but at that time more expensive: 1 U.S. dollars CPU hours, 1 U.S. dollars GB months; and now, as technology progresses, Amazon's service prices have been reduced by nearly one order of magnitude: a minimum of 0.1 dollars CPU hours, 0.15 dollars GB months.

One thing to keep in mind is that these services were called Grid computing and are now called cloud computing! There are, of course, technical differences (such as virtualization technology being adopted in the era of cloud computing), but it is believed that if these big companies from the beginning of the current cloud computing is called grid computing, there will be no objection.

We do not worry about the name problem, called Grid computing, or cloud computing, can solve the problem is good! Many people call cloud computing from the previous technologies, such as grids, virtualization, utility computing, is a kind of hype, this has some truth. But the key is the effect: don't you see? Since the concept of cloud computing has been proposed, this pattern of distributed computing has indeed been an unprecedented development!
