Oracle's software sales continue to grow Xinhua San Francisco March 27 The quarterly financial report released by Oracle, the business software giant, on 25th, showed that its new software sales have been growing year-on-year for two consecutive quarters after a year of decline. This is seen as the latest sign of rising corporate information technology spending. According to Oracle, the company's new software license sales reached $1.7 billion trillion in the last quarter ended February 28, up 13% from a year earlier. Regardless of the impact of the acquisition of Solar micro-electronics companies, the year-on-year increase of 10%, higher than Oracle earlier expectations. Oracle also predicts that its new software license sales revenue is expected to grow 3% to 13% year-on-year in the current quarter. New software sales are related to the continuous revenue of software upgrades and maintenance, which is the key index to evaluate the performance of software enterprises. Oracle's acquisition of the Sun Micro-electronics company was officially completed in the last fiscal quarter, and its results have been a concern in the quarter. Oracle said total operating income for the quarter grew by about 17% per cent year-on-year, but the net profit fell by about 10% year-on-year, affected by mergers and acquisitions spending. Fujitsu to transfer "ipad" trademark to Apple U.S. technology bloggers said 26th that Apple has recently officially acquired the title of the ipad brand from Fujitsu, Japan. With the launch of Apple's IPad tablet computer in early April, a deal with Fujitsu will help Apple defuse legal disputes over the product's trademark. It is reported that Fujitsu began in 2003 for a retailer's handheld devices to apply for the "IPad" trademark, but because other companies use similar names of products, Fujitsu's application also encountered some trouble. Last year, the US Patent and Trademark Office began a review of Fujitsu's applications, and Apple raised objections. The bureau issued a document March 17 this year that the "IPad" trademark is now owned by Apple. The behind-the-scenes details of Apple's deal with Fujitsu are reported to be unclear, and it is not ruled out that Apple may have paid for it. (Reporter Morel)
