Microsoft has said that Windows 7 will bring users convenience and greatly improve efficiency, task completion efficiency is higher than usual, about 1.75 times times more efficient than the previous normal work. and faster startup and shutdown. From the Windows XP & Vista & win7 system speed data below, Microsoft claims that the Windows7 speed has been readily available.

Influenced by Windows Vista, perhaps most people still think that Windows XP is still the fastest operating system, but ZDNet Germany has Windows7 (the latest RTM version), Vista, and Windows XP is installed on three different configurations of machines, the MSI Wind (netbook), Acer Timeline and Core i7 high-end machine, and conducted a series of tests, test results are as follows:

The hardware configuration is as follows:

Figure: Hardware Configuration Test Platform Introduction

In the figure above, the lower end (low-end platform) is a MSI netbook, 1.6GHz Atom processor, 2GB memory, 500GB West hard disk; Mobile (midrange platform) is a Acer notebook, 1.4GHz core single core processor, 4GB memory and 256GB SSD drive, while high end (high-end platform) is equipped with Intel i7 3.2GHz 4 Core CPU,6GB memory, 256GB SSD hard drives and desktops for ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics cards.

Startup and shutdown speed (the smaller the number the better):

As you can see from the image below, at the high-end platform, Windows 7 RTM is fully accounted for, and on the low-end netbook platform, Windows 7 is only slightly slower to boot loading than XP, but is still less than XP from the boot to full display desktop; , both high-end and low-end platforms, Windows 7 is the fastest.

In the boot and shutdown speed, the high-end Core i7 processing platform for the WINDOWS7 is the best performance.

And at the low-end of the netbook (the processor for Atom N330), although not one-sided Windows7 dominant, but the overall performance is still windows7 best.

Application Performance Testing:

Test tool for PCMark Vantage, use the default setting to run three times to get average score, the system is 64-bit version of Vista and Windows 7, each project scored as follows (the larger the number the better).

As you can see from the chart, Windows 7 is almost all in the middle and high-end platform (in addition to the weak game performance on the laptop platform), the average leader in the notebook platform more than 30%, high-end platform has more than 15% advantages.

However, most of the PCMark tests are Windows integrated applications, and the performance advantages are less pronounced when using third-party programs. Tests such as Everest,7-zip,3dmark Vantage, cinebench show a small gap between Windows 7 and Vista. But anyway, Windows 7 is a remarkable improvement over Vista.

Memory management and Cache usage:

In the Vista era, Microsoft enabled a pre-read technology called SuperFetch, which is based on the user's habit of loading some of the usual programs in free physical memory to speed up the next time these programs start, which is one of the reasons why Vista "eats" memory.

The use of this technology, but also with the current mainstream hard disk read and write speed bottlenecks, but with the emergence of new SSD storage, the speed of reading and writing has been greatly improved, the closure of SuperFetch is a better choice, so the technology also needs to be improved in a timely manner.

In Windows 7 RTM, this technique is clearly good news for users, compared to the Vista era, where memory consumption is more reasonably controlled. As you can see from the image below, Windows 7 does not have the same dramatic growth as the vista system in terms of cache usage when SuperFetch is turned on.

Memory efficiency

According to the above data, the Windows7 speed that Microsoft claims is very fast already to have the basis. Although XP has better compatibility with some older machines, Windows 7 has surpassed XP and Vista in performance. Faster startup and shutdown speeds, more multitasking parallel processing, faster hardware devices and system component reads, all make Windows 7 more outstanding.
