Introduction: I have never touched Linux before. It is a ground-based Linux newbie, so the following content is also the same as that of others.Article.
Version: Ubuntu Linux 6.06 lts English
Environment: Windows XP sp2 pro + vmware workstation 5.5.2
Note: There are a lot of content. Please read it with patience. I believe it will be helpful to many new people. PS: This article is absolutely original except for the reference of the font beautification content. If you need to reprint it, please indicate the source. Thank you!

I. Detailed installation process:
1. Download the ISO image of VMware Workstation 5.5.2 and Ubuntu Linux 6.06lts in English versions from the Internet, and prepare a brand new partition F drive, 18 GB in advance for Linux under Windows XP. Everything went smoothly with Vmware installation. Finally, you only need to search for one on the SN network. After installation, you will see two more virtual connections vmnet1 and vmnet8 in the network connection under windows, which will be used later. Then start installing ubuntu.

2. Create a new virtual machine, use the typical settings, select the system Ubuntu, name it, and select the installation location F: \ root directory. The network configuration does not change. The following describes the details. I used 15 GB for the space allocated to this system. I reserved 18 GB for it anyway. That's enough. Until the end.

3. Configure the VM before starting it. First of all, it is similar to installing windows to set the boot from the optical drive. Therefore, select the optical drive in the boot mode and then select the downloaded Ubuntu Linux image. Then, the boot will start from the optical drive. In network settings, my Windows XP is allocated through DHCP in the LAN. In fact, host-only or NAT is used here. I tried both of them to access the Internet at the end. If you select host-only, the network connection used in Linux will be vmnet1 in the future, and vmnet8 will be used for Nat. No matter which one you select, you must make the following settings in the local connection under Windows. Remember, it is a "Local Connection ". Right-click "properties"> "advanced", and click "Internet Connection Sharing". In the "home network connection" section below, select the type you choose. That is, host-only corresponds to vmnet1 and Nat corresponds to vmnet8. Then confirm. Here, a warning will pop up saying that your IP address will be forcibly changed to 192.168.0.1 or something. Don't worry about it. OK. Finally, configure the memory allocated to this virtual machine. Because I have MB of memory in windows, I will allocate it to MB first. OK. The basic settings are complete.

4. Start the instance at startup. Normally, four options are available: Start or install ubuntu. Then there is the loading process. After the installation is complete, it will enter the desktop. There are two options: Install and example. Of course we want to install it. Double-click the settings before installation. There are 6 steps in total. Because they are in English, I can only understand this first. (In fact, I am not doing well in this process, probably followed by 10 times before and after. Because at first I set the memory allocated to the virtual machine to 256, which is recommended by the system. Later, the first step of the install process is still fast. In the second step, the mouse cannot be selected, I am stuck, so I can't continue here. I 've been depressed for a long time. Later I changed the memory to MB .) In the end, click "Next". Of course, you don't need to say anything about the account password. After completing step 6, we started to dress up Ubuntu Linux. Wait ....

5. The installation process is about 25 minutes. I personally think it is faster than windows, but it is a little slow to start and shut down (later experiences ). So far, the entire installation process is complete.

Ii. Install VMware Tools:
1. Configure Internet access. This is the first premise, because the installation of vmwaretools requires some files that are not in the default system. As the preparations are complete, there will be no problems. Go to system-Administration-networking (in Chinese, system-system management-networking) to set the network type. Enter the password with the root permission. I learned later that the root account is locked after Ubuntu is installed by default. Open the terminal (don't joke about it. It took me a long time to know which terminal was used in Linux for the first time. Here we will tell you the new guy like me: Application-accesorries-terminal, chinese is applicationProgram-Attachment-terminal), input:

Reference:
(You can use Sudo-sh to switch to the root account)
Sudo password Root

The password here refers to the root password you set, and the system will ask you to enter the password of your current account, then enter the root password and confirm. In this way, the root account is activated.
Go back to network settings. On the page that appears, there should be a virtual network card and a moderm. Select the first network card and click Properties. Here, the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway are set. Because we have already set the shared IP address to 192.168.0.1 in windows, the IP address here should be in the same network segment as it. I set 192.168.0.2, mask 255.255.255.0, And the gateway must be 192.168.0.1. Then, confirm and select DNS configuration. My computer is automatically allocated by DHCP in the LAN, and the DNS server is the IP address 192.168.10.1 in the LAN. You can fill in according to your actual situation. Then you can exit with other configurations.

2. Start to install VMware Tools. Go to the Ubuntu system, switch to the VM menu in VMware Workstation, and select the install VMware workshop format below. Because ubuntu does not support rpminstallation, You can decompress the tar.gz file for installation. One thing to mention first, because the installation of VMware Tools must install a C header files, and the version must be the same as that of the system (I did not know it after installation, otherwise, a/Linux/include folder cannot be found during installation .) The procedure is as follows:

Reference:
Uname-R
Sudo apt-Get install GCC make linux-headers-2.6.15-27-686 (replace with your own version here)

After the installation is complete, go to the decompressed folder and install it with sudo./vmware-install.pl. Use the default settings until the configuration is complete.
Next, we will set up sharing and mutual access between Windows and Linux. Some people say why we need to set this item. Of course, it is for convenience that we can read files from each other. More importantly, we need to use the Windows XP font for system beautification, copy from there. Sharing settings are relatively simple. There is shared folders in VMware Workstation-VM-settings-Options. Just add the folder you want to share. I will not go into details here. If you still have any questions, please read the following article.
How to install VMware Tools
To install VMware Tools, you must re-compile the module for the new kernel. Therefore, you must first install the basic compilation system and kernel header files.

$ Sudo apt-Get install build-essential
$ Sudo apt-Get install linux-headers-'uname-R'

Install VMware Tools. Select VMware menu VM | install VMware Tools..., the system will automatically load CDROM, open a terminal window and execute the following command:

$ Tar zxf/Media/CDROM/VMwareTool-5.0.0-* .tar.gz (changed with version)
$ CD vmware-tools-distrib
$ Sudo./vmware-install.pl

3. Installation input method:
after the system is installed, you cannot enter English for Internet access, in addition, you must enter Chinese characters to search for documents online. So what is next After configuring the Internet access? Some people say they want to download the Chinese input method. Configure the download source first! Go to the Wiki post. Here:
Basic System Configuration
follow the instructions above, absolutely no problem. I chose the official server in Asia and compared it after Ping. You can choose one based on your actual situation.
In Fact, I initially wanted to select fcitx because many people on the Internet say that fcitx is better than scim. So we downloaded the latest fcitx-3.4.1. I haven't done this for a day. As mentioned on the internet, extract the package first, compile the package, and then make install. The GCC is not installed at the beginning, and./configure cannot be used. Later, we can use sudo apt-Get install build-essential to complete compilation. However, after make, there were a lot of framemgr. c error: I found a lot of people on the Internet. I couldn't solve the problem. I decided not to install fcitx in My anger.
I decided to use scim later. I heard that scim is automatically installed after the system is set to Chinese, so I started setting it quickly. (Of course, this section is not required for Chinese users.) system-Administration-language support. Find the Chinese character, and click a tick on the right to confirm. Then the system starts to download and automatically install the Chinese language support package. After installation, enter language support and change the following default system to Chinese (China ). OK, and then restart the system. This step is actually included in the previous Wiki article.

Iv. System font beautification:
I have read many articles about beautification. I have also read vstar and dalaka posts on the Forum. Here is the link of dalaka:
System font beautification comparable to Windows
I operate it step by step, but the final result is garbled.
I know that many of my friends share the same experience with me. I chose the dalaka beautification and used tahoma and verdana fonts instead of wenquanyi fonts. I also did it step by step. In the end, when I chose tahoma and verdana, the following is a bunch of characters stacked with garbled characters. Finally, I am able to share with all my friends who have been depressed like me:
The most important first step is to modify the/etc/fonts/language-selector.conf file instead of/etc/fonts. conf, otherwise the system will not be reconnected!
Step 2: Modify the reading permission of the font, which is the root cause of Garbled text. Command:

Reference:
Sudo chmod 644/usr/share/fonts/zh_cn /*

After these two steps, note that there should be no problem. Restart the system and enjoy ubuntu.
Appendix: font configuration
Application Font: Verdana-9 document Font: Tahoma-9 desktop Font: Verdana-9 window title Font: tahoma bold-9 equal width Font: verdana bold-9

V. Postscript
I spent three days figuring out this. I hope this will help many new people and reduce their detours so that everyone can learn from each other and make progress, it is also my original intention to post here. I am also a newbie, and I still have a lot to learn. Therefore, we invite our elders to care more about these new people and create a good learning atmosphere.
