10 tips for troubleshooting Outlook

Outlook software in Microsoft Office is a "recognized" standard enterprise mail client software. In general, Outlook is really easy to use, provided that the user is already quite skilled. I once asked a friend with two years of experience in Outlook about the software. He concluded that Outlook is quite useful, my conclusion is that he has never used any other mail client software. After all, sometimes Outlook may suddenly fail to run normally, making users confused. In this case, if the user does not have some troubleshooting skills, the problem may become quite troublesome.

In fact, if you can try to eliminate the following 10 methods listed by Linux expert Jack Wallen one by one, the problem can be easily solved.

1. Scan PST files

When a PST file is generated, errors are often inevitable, which also prevents Outlook from running properly. Now you can try to run the scanpst.exe file to scan every PST file used in Outlook. It takes some time to scan the PST file. In the scanning process, scanpst.exe backs up user data, scans errors, and fixes all detected errors. If the user data file is large, it will certainly take a lot of time. To use the scanning pstfile function, first confirm the location of the executable file scanpst.exe. (The file location depends on the Windows version used by the user .)

2. Automatic archiving

Although the automatic archiving function is not completely a troubleshooting technique, if you do not use the automatic archiving function, the generated PST file may be too large, which affects the normal operation of Outlook. To avoid this, it is best to set the automatic archiving function. When the size of user data files exceeds the storage space allowed by the server, you are advised to perform automatic archiving on a yearly basis. By doing so, you can archive as much user data as possible to the local storage directory, thus clearing the space on the server. At the same time, this can also reduce the PST file and alleviate the problems caused by the huge PST file. After the automatic archiving is completed, it is best to use the PST file scanning function again.

3. Rename an OST file

If you often save data as a locally cached file, you can rename the OST file to solve many problems. Close Outlook, open the folder that saves the cached data, and change the. ost file extension to a. old or similar name when the extension is visible. When you use Outlook next time, the. ost file will be rebuilt first, and then Outlook will become as easy to use as newly installed.

4. Delete/recreate an email account

When neither of the methods described above can solve the problem (unwilling to uninstall and reinstall Outlook), you can try to delete the Outlook account. You must be cautious when deciding to do so. If you are using a POP server account, you need to back up the inbox, calendar, and contacts of the current account as data files in advance so that the data can be imported again after the POP account is rebuilt. If the user is using an Exchange server account or an IMAP account, the process becomes simple deletion-re-join. To do this, you only need to enter the option, find the email account, and delete it.

5. Disable the plug-in

The more plug-ins loaded by Outlook, the slower the running speed. If you do not believe it, you can try to start Outlook in safe mode (enter the command line outlook.exe/safe) to know how fast Outlook can run. To disable the plug-in, you must first go to the Trust center, disable suspicious or insecure plug-ins, and restart Outlook. Plug-ins are likely to be the culprit in Outlook abnormal operation.

6. Disable anti-virus scanning

Many anti-virus tools are compatible with Outlook and scan emails in transmission through clients. In some cases, this greatly reduces the running speed of Outlook. If you cannot determine where Outlook is faulty, you can temporarily disable the anti-virus scan function. If the problem lies in the anti-virus tool, you can only upgrade the anti-virus software or directly contact the software supplier to solve the problem. It should be noted that if the anti-virus scan is disabled for a long time, Outlook will become extremely insecure.

7. Run in safe mode

As mentioned earlier, running Outlook in security mode is a good way to troubleshoot faults. However, note that many features are no longer valid. This clearly means that running in safe mode is not a solution to the problem-it is just a method to help debug debugging. Sometimes, simply running Outlook in safe mode can solve the problem at hand.

8. Run with resetnav

When the user sends the outlook.exe/resetnavpane command, all the settings are reset to the custom attributes in the Outlook navigation panel (the left panel with the folder hierarchy and application buttons. This resetting is necessary when the user has done something to the navigation panel (something they do not remember, because the previous work may cause Outlook failure or problems at startup. Note that you will lose all custom modifications made to the navigation panel.

9. Migrate the PST file from the server

Users will collect PST files that are shared (or re-transmitted) on the server. The files are best from the local drive. If you have more than one PST file that must be connected to a remote location, Outlook may be in trouble. Move these archives to a local hard disk to improve performance.

10. Adjust calendar permissions

If someone sends an invitation to others using his or her calendar, but others cannot specify or edit an appointment, the user needs to change their permissions. Open calendar in Outlook, right-click share calendar, Click properties, and enter the permission tab. Here, you can add users to the calendar and grant them special permissions to allow them to read and own the calendar.
