1. Understand New Features of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS brings exciting new features and changes, so we recommend that you take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the new improvements before getting started.

If you upgraded the Ubuntu 2014 LTS version released in 14.04, you will find that the new version provides the same simple new features and applications. For example, in Unity Dash, online search is no longer enabled by default. in earlier versions, you must manually disable it.

If you have experience using Ubuntu, we recommend that you read the new features of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and check for improvements.

2. Check for latest updates

The new operating system will inevitably have some flaws. Therefore, we recommend that you check system updates frequently in the near future to fix bugs related to security and stability as soon as possible.

To get updates to the new Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, go to "Software Updater" in Unity Dash and click "check for updates.

3. Install the Linux graphics card driver

Ubuntu 16.04 supports "out-of-the-box" For most Nvidia and Intel Display hardware. Of course, you can also install free open-source drivers or other closed-source drivers. If you want your Ubuntu PC to achieve the best display performance, you should install a proprietary graphics card driver suitable for your own graphics card.

If you plan to play the latest Steam game or use heavy GPU applications in Ubuntu, you must install the latest proprietary Linux graphics card driver. After the compatible graphics card driver is installed, Ubuntu provides a smooth and unified desktop experience and a higher frame rate during the game.

To install the graphics card driver, you can select from the software and updates-additional driver tab. For gamers using Nvidia, you can install the Nvidia driver for Ubuntu through PPA.

Note: For users using the Radeon device, the AMD driver does not currently support Ubuntu 16.04, and amd gpu driver will be supported in the future.

4. Install the media Decoder

Due to legal restrictions, Ubuntu cannot integrate the "out-of-the-box" MP3, MP4, and other multimedia file decoding support, however, we can manually install Ubuntu Restricted Extras after the system is installed to obtain the media decoder.

5. Mobile Unity location

Since the first release of Unity in Ubuntu 11.04, it has been fixed on the left side of the system. However, from Ubuntu 16.04, You can manually place the Unity column on the left or bottom of the desktop. Currently, you cannot move it to the top or right.

6. Click the icon to minimize

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS also supports the "minimal" function by clicking the application Launcher icon, but you still need to manually enable it.

You can install the Unity Tweak Tool GUI Tool and configure it in Unity-Launcher-Minimise, or use the following command on the terminal to enable the Tool.

gsettings set org.compiz.unityshell:/org/compiz/profiles/unity/plugins/unityshell/ launcher-minimize-window true

7. Change your favorite Wallpaper
