20 things to do after installing Linux Mint 17

Linux Mint Qiana Cinnamon
Linux Mint 17 has been released, named Qiana. Mint is one of the best Linux distributions, targeting desktop users, focusing on usability and simplicity. It carries a very different desktop environment, such as mate and Cinnamon, and is based on various distributions, such as Ubuntu or Debian.

Download the correct ISO for your system, burn it to a DVD, or you can create a USB boot disk to start it. After installation, it's time to use some optimization tools and basic applications to optimize system performance and experience, so your system is surging!

1. Updating the system
The first thing is the top priority is to keep your system up to date. Run the following command in the terminal quickly.

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
Alternatively, you can use the Update Manager (mintupdate) to do this, and you can find it in menu > Manage (Administration).

2. Retrieve Old Wallpaper
Each Linux Mint distribution comes with a set of the latest beautiful wallpapers. However, you can also install the wallpaper from the previous version.

$ sudo apt-get install mint-backgrounds-*
3. Install more browsers
Linux Mint 17 has Firefox installed by default, and you can get more browsers, such as Chronium and Google Chrome.

The Chronium browser can be obtained from the warehouse.

$ sudo apt-get install Chromium-browser
As for Google Chrome, please visit google.com/chrome to download the Deb package and install it using Gdebi.

4. Install Flash Player
The Adobe Flash plugin package (Adobe-flashplugin) is installed by default on Mint, so you can play flash games in Firefox or enjoy the web version of the video.

Google Chrome now uses the Flash Player-based Pepper API, and the plugin is built into chrome, so you don't have to do anything extra for it.

For Chronium, however, Flash Player-based Pepper is not included (because it is not a free component), so you need to install it manually.

Install the following package to install Pepper Flash Player for chronium. It will automatically download pepper Flash Player from Google Chrome and add it to chronium.

$ sudo apt-get install Pepperflashplugin-nonfree
The above command should help you install Flash Player into chronium. In case the download fails, you can use the following command to reinstall it.

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure pepperflashplugin-nonfree
5. Install multimedia decoding
The limited additional package can help you install most basic decoding, allowing you to play a format like MP3. It will also help you install Microsoft fonts.

$ sudo apt-get install Ubuntu-restricted-extras
To enable playback of an encrypted DVD, install the following package.

$ sudo apt-get install Libdvdread4
$ sudo/usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
6. Installing the proprietary Drive
If you have an Nvidia or ATI graphics card, or a Broadcom wireless card, then install the proprietary drivers provided by the vendor that will give you the best hardware performance.

7. Install Dropbox
The Linux Mint Warehouse already provides Dropbox's client package, so you don't have to look all over the house.

$ sudo apt-get install dropbox Python-gpgme

11. Optimize your Desktop
1. Fix the date format on the system tray
The time applet on the right side of the bottom panel shows only the time, and it can also set the display date. Right-click the date-time applet on the right side of the bottom panel, then click Configure, select the box labeled Use custom Date format, and then fill in

2. Install themes, extensions, widgets, desktop components
Play some good things for your desktop. You can place some desktop components in the desktop area, put small programs on the panel, add some extensions to the desktop effect, and install some themes for the desktop design.

3. Modify Firefox's search engine
You may have noticed that Firefox chose the Yahoo search engine by default, and there was no Google in the search engine list. Click on "Manage Search engine" > get more Search engine, it will take you to http://www.linuxmint.com/searchengines.php.

Pull the scroll bar down to the commercial Search engine section and find and click on the Google icon. Go to the next page, click on the search engine list again, and this time you will see the "Add Google" option, click on it to use Google search. Guake drop-down terminal
The drop-down terminal allows you to access the terminal by tapping a single key, Guake is one of these, which is used for GTK-based desktops. The drop-down terminal is shown/hidden and kept running as required, so you don't have to open the terminal from the menu or launcher. This is an essential tool for those who are passionate about the terminal.

$ sudo apt-get install Guake
The guake needs to be configured to start on each login. First, find the path to the Guake command.

$ which guake
/usr/bin/guake
Now, add it to the list of startup programs. Turn left, go to System setup > Start the program, then click Add. Fill in the dialog box

Name-guake drop-down terminal command-/usr/bin/guake

Click Add. Now Guake has run to your list of running programs and will start automatically each time.

Uget Download Manager
Uget is a simple and robust cross-platform download manager that works well on Linux. Although it lacks the multipart download file feature, it is still a very stable download manager.

$ sudo apt-get install Uget
Deluge BitTorrent client

Hardinfo-System Information tools
Hardinfo is a handy GUI tool that can be used to report a large amount of complete system hardware information. It allows you to centrally view information such as processors, memory, storage devices, network configuration, printers, USB devices, sound/video adapters, and more. It has the capability to test and evaluate system performance.

$ sudo apt-get install Hardinfo
17. Install the Mate Desktop environment
In addition to Cinnamon,linux Mint also comes with another popular desktop environment mate (maatay) desktop. If you want to try it, then install it.

$ sudo apt-get install mint-meta-mate
Now you can select the Mate session on the login screen.

18. Allow other partitions to be writable
If you have other ext partitions, like to store and back up files, you need to make them writable so that you don't have to use root privileges every time.

First, use Gksudo to open the partition mount directory in the file Manager.

$ Gksudo Nemo
Navigate to the partition directory, right-click to go to Properties > Permissions tab

Give directory Access-Create and delete file permissions to users, groups, and others.

Give "file access"-Read and Write permissions to users, groups, and others.

For NTFS partitions, you do not need to do this.

19. Installing Conky
Conky is a lightweight system monitoring tool that displays statistical data on various resources of the system, such as CPU, memory, network, etc. through a desktop graphics component. It is not necessary, but it can make your desktop more beautiful and dazzling.

$ sudo apt-add-repository-y Ppa:teejee2008/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install Conky-manager
Start Conky Manager from the Application menu and add components to the desktop. You can also select the boot boot option to let the Conky boot up.

20. Install some games
Linux does have some cool games, it's entertaining, and it's free. Note that some games like SuperTuxKart and 0AD require dedicated graphics processors to optimize performance.

Clear

Java applet support for Google Chrome/chronium
By default, "Icedtea-plugin" is installed to provide Java applet support for Firefox.
