After defining the data source to be used in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services (SSAs) project, the next step is to define the data source view of the project. The Data Source view is a single and unified view of metadata, which comes from the specified table and the view defined by the data source in the project. By storing metadata in the data source view, you can use metadata during development without opening a connection to any basic data source. For more information, see .

In the following task, a data source view is defined, which includes five tables from the adventure works DW data source.

Define a new data source view

2. In Solution Explorer, right-click"Data Source view"And then click"Create a data source view".

   The Data Source view wizard is displayed.

4. In"Welcome to the data source view wizard"Page, click"Next".

   The"Select data source"Page."Relational Data Source"UnderAdventure works DWThe data source has been selected.

   To create a data source view based on multiple data sources, you must first define a data source view based on a single data source. This data source is called the primary data source. You can then add tables and views from the secondary data source. When you design dimensions that contain attributes based on tables in multiple data sources, you may need to define the Microsoft SQL server data source as the primary data source to use its Distributed Query Engine function.

    

6. Click"Next".

   The"Select Table and view"Page. On this page, you can select tables and views from the list of objects provided by the selected data source. You can filter this list to help select tables and views.

8. In"Available objects"In the list, select the following list (multiple tables can be selected by pressing the ctrl key at the same time ):

   • DBO. dimcustomer

   • DBO. dimgeography
   • DBO. dimproduct
   • DBO. dimtime
   • DBO. factinternetsales

10. Click>To add the selected table"Contained object"List.

    Displays"Select Table and view"Page.

12. Click"Next"And then click"Done"To define the adventure works DW Data Source view.

    In this case, the data source viewAdventure works DWThe"Data Source view"Folder. The Data Source view is also displayed in the data source view designer of business intelligence development studio. This designer contains the following elements:

    • "Relationship Diagram"Pane. The tables and their relationships are displayed graphically.

    • "Table"The pane displays the tables and their schema elements in the form of a tree.
    • "Graph OrganizationProgram"Pane, where you can create a subgraph to view a subset of the data source view.
    • A toolbar specific to the data source view designer.

14. Click"Maximize"To maximize the development environment of Microsoft Visual Studio.

16. On the toolbar displayed at the top of the data source view designer, use"Zoom"Icon"Relationship Diagram"The table in the pane is reduced by 50%. This will hide the column details of each table.

18. Click"Hide automatically"Click, which is the icon on the title bar of Solution Explorer.

    In this case, the solution Resource Manager is minimized and becomes a tab on the right of the development environment. To view Solution Explorer again, point the pointer to the Solution Explorer tab. To unhide Solution Explorer, click"Hide automatically"Button.

20. If the "properties" window is not hidden by default, click"Hide automatically".

    Now, you can"Relationship Diagram"You can easily view all tables and their relationships in the pane. Note that there are three relationships between the factinternetsales table and the dimtime table. Each sale has three dates associated with it: Order Date, expiration date, and delivery date. To view the details of a link, double-click"Relationship Diagram"Link arrow in the pane.

you have successfully created the adventure works DW Data Source view, which includes the metadata of the five tables from the adventure works DW data source. In the next lesson, the initial version of the analysis services tutorial cube is defined based on the five tables.

to add a table to the view of an existing data source, right-click the "Relationship Diagram" pane or the "table" pane, click Add/delete table . For simplicity, add only the tables and views to be used in the project to the data source view.
