3.1.1 Starting the Installation Wizard

Prepare the SQL Server 2014 DVD disc and start a fresh installation of a SQL Server 2014 instance.

If the Setup wizard does not start automatically, open the DVD folder and run the SETUP.exe file.

Go to the SQL Server Installation Center interface and select Install in the options on the left. Then select "New SQL Server Standalone installation or add features to an existing installation" in the detailed list on the right.

3.1.2 Product Key and license Terms

Enter the product key, and the installation Wizard verifies the applicable version according to the product key. If you need to install an evaluation version, select "Evaluation" from the drop-down list of "Specify available versions" or "Express" If you install Express Edition.

3.1.3 Check rules and product updates

The Setup Wizard examines some global rules to ensure that no potential problems are encountered during installation. If some rules cannot be passed while checking, you must correct these failed rules before setup can continue.

Starting with SQL Server 2012, the Setup wizard will try to connect to the Internet to check for important updates for SQL Server. If the online search for updates fails, you are prompted that SQL Server Setup cannot search for updates through the Windows update service. You can ignore this prompt and click Next to continue the installation.

The installation wizard will also identify some rules to avoid problems that may occur when the Setup program runs.

3.1.4 Role and Feature selection

The Installation Wizard provides 3 installation features. Click the SQL Server feature installation option to select the feature components that you want to install individually.

Select the feature components that you want to install. You can set up the installation directory manually.

3.1.5 Configuring Instances and servers

By default, the first instance installed on this computer is the default instance, and the default instance ID is MSSQLSERVER. If you need to install a named instance, you need to select the Named instance option and enter the name of the instance.

The root of the instance is already specified when you choose to install the feature component, and the Installation Wizard creates the appropriate directory under the instance root directory. For example, to install an instance of SQL Server R2, the instance root is "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\" and the instance ID is newinstance, the installation directory for the database engine is "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\mssql10_50.newinstance ".

Tips:

To isolate the installation location for each component, the SQL Server Setup Wizard generates a unique instance ID for each component in the given instance of SQL Server. For example, the SQL Server R2 named instance named "MyInstance", the default instance ID is Mssql10_50.myinstance, and its registry hive is Hklm\software\microsoft\ Microsoft SQL server\mssql10_50.myinstance.

By default, the instance name is used as the instance ID. This is used to identify the installation directory and registry keys for an instance of SQL Server. SSAS is the only SQL Server component that supports instance renaming after installation. If you rename an analysis Services instance, the instance ID is not changed. After the instance is renamed, the directory and registry keys continue to use the instance ID that was created during the installation.

Specify a service account for each component service and configure the startup type for those services.

The collation (Collation Sequence) controls how SQL Server treats character data when it performs storage, retrieval, sorting, and comparison operations. Collations define the supported character sets, including case sensitivity, accent, and Kana. For example, the default collation for the English version of SQL Server is sql_latin1_general_cp1_ci_as, so you get support for the Western European character set, which is not case-sensitive (case-insensitive). Sensitive to stress (accent-sensitive). When you perform a sort operation that is case insensitive, E and e are treated as the same characters, accent-sensitive, and E, è, é, ê are considered different characters.

The default collation for the Chinese version of SQL Server is chinese_prc_ci_as, which means sorting for Simplified Chinese Unicode, case insensitive, but accent sensitive.

The collation of the server is a default collation used by all databases, tables, and columns for that instance. After the installation is complete, you can specify different collations for the database, tables, and columns.

The Setup Wizard detects the collation of the current Windows operating system and acts as the default collation for the database engine and Analysis Services.

3.1.6 Configuring the Database engine

Configure the required options for the database engine. At a minimum, you need to specify an account (or group) to become a SQL Server administrator.

By default, the data directory is located under the instance root directory. You can specify a directory for the data file.

If the database engine needs to enable file flow, you need to select the Enable FILESTREAM for Transact-SQL access option. The File table introduced in SQL Server 2012, and the memory-optimized tables introduced by SQL Server 2014, require this option to be enabled.

3.1.7 Configuring SSAS and SSRS

If you selected install Analysis Services and Reporting Services, enter the installation configuration interface for the SSAS and SSRS feature components.

3.1.8 Complete Installation

After checking that all the installation options are correct, click the Install button to begin the formal installation.

After the installation is complete, check the installation log file. Finally, click the Close button to complete the installation and return to the SQL Server installation Center.
