34, WIN2000 Registry Application nine cases

As we know, similar to the Windows 9x operating system, in Windows 2000, configuration information is centrally stored in the registry database, but the difference is that in Windows The Registry Editor used to modify the registry files in 9x is Regedit.exe, and in Windows 2000 you can use two registry editors to modify the registry database To edit: One is Regedit.exe, and the other is Regedt32.exe. The former can be found under the Windows 2000 installation directory \winnt, which can be found under \Winnt\System32. If you're in trouble, just click Start/Run, and then type "regedit" or "regedt32" at the prompt to open the Registry Editor's window. Generally speaking Regedt32.exe is more powerful and secure than Regedit.exe (mainly Regedit.exe does not fully support the Regedt32.exe data type), but the normal modification is not much different, so it is entirely up to you to choose which registry Editor to use. I personally think the Regedit.exe interface may be friendlier (Figure 1). Here the author will use the Regedit.exe editor to WIN2000 several more practical application modification skills introduced to you, hope to bring you some inspiration.

Before making any changes to the registry, I would like to make a simple description of the Zishugen project name of the NT registry to help you understand the meaning of the modification:

(1) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT includes object linking and embedding (OLE) and file class related data

(2) HKEY_CURRENT_USER contains user profiles for the currently logged-on user, including environment variables, desktop settings, network connections, printers, and application settings

(3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE contains information about the local computer system, including hardware and operating system data, such as bus type, system memory, device drivers, and startup control data

(4) HKEY_USERS contains all currently loaded user profiles, including HKEY_CURRENT_USER and default profiles, which always refer to the HKEY_USERS subset. Users of the remote access server have no profiles under this item on the server, and their profiles are loaded into the registry of their own computers

(5) Hkey_current_config contains the hardware profile information that is used by the local computer system at startup. This information is used to configure settings, including the device drivers that are loaded and the display resolution to use

In addition, I have to be very long-winded to tell you: Registry changes are quite dangerous, once you have made incorrect changes to the registry, light causes system instability will not be able to boot the operating system, so you should be the modified registry file backup, just in case. Then click the Registry Editor's first menu "registry"/"Export Registry File" (see Figure 2), and then choose to store the path, the registry file can be saved after the confirmation. Of course, you can also use other methods to back up the registry and make it useful when necessary. Well, after this, we can rest assured that the registry has been modified, and all of the methods of modification in this article take the Regedit.exe editor as an example.

1. Set startup information or increase the warning title

Every time Windows 2000 starts, the system displays the login information "Press Ctrl+alt+delete" to sign in, and if you want to press the Ctrl+alt+delete key combination, it will automatically display some information that you want yourself or other users to see. You can use the following methods:

Into the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon primary Key, double-click the "legalnoticecaption" value name on the right side of the pane, When the String Editor dialog box appears, you can enter the title of the Information conversation window in the string text box, such as "Please note!" , and then double-click the LegalNoticeText value name on the right, and when the String Editor dialog box appears, enter the contents of the Information window in the string text box, such as "This is the WIN2000 server, pay attention to your permissions!" ”。 So when you or other users start the system, there will be a message box to remind all users of the machine to pay attention to their identity, do not arbitrarily modify the system. Of course, you can definitely enter other motto or greeting, to a very personalized "2000 opening remarks."

2. Shut down the system directly without logging in

In Windows Professional, when the "Start Login" dialog appears on the startup screen, you can also directly shut down the system (ShutDown), in addition to being able to press the Ctrl+alt+delete key combination, enter the username and password, and then log on. Because WIN2000 Professional provides a button option to "Turn off System" under the dialog box, you must add it yourself in WIN2000 Server. In fact, most of the cases we do not need to login (as long as the server to start up on it) can be directly shut down the system. It is necessary to add a "Turn off System" button option in its Login dialog box, and you can use the following methods:

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Primary Key, double-click the "Shutdown Withoutlogon" value name on the right side of the pane , when the String Editor dialog box appears, you can enter a value of 1 (or other non-0) in the string text box. After the completion of the login, on the screen will be a "shutdown system" button, this time as long as you click the mouse button, the system will be directly off, is not more convenient?

3. Prohibit the previous login account name display

When you log in to the WIN2000 server and press the Ctrl+alt+delete key combination, the system will automatically default to the name of the previous login in the Username box when you are asked to enter the user name and password, but sometimes you do not want to display this name, you can use the following methods:

Enter HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Primary key, double click on the right-hand side of the pane "DontDisplayLastUserName" The name of the value. If you do not have this name, you can add it by using the new command on the Edit menu, whose data type is a string value. When the String Editor dialog box appears, you can enter a value of 1 (or other non-0) in the string text box.

4. Set up automatic login

Each time you log on to Windows 2000, you have to press the Ctrl+alt+delete key combination at the same time, then you can enter the user name and password login, sometimes slightly cumbersome, if you want to be more efficient, you can set up automatic login, you can use the following methods:

Enter the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon primary key, and click the New command on the Edit menu to add a value named " DefaultUserName, the data type is a string value. Then double-click the key to change the key value to "Administrator" or a superuser (Figure 5) in the String text box when the String Editor dialog box appears. In the same vein, add a string value called "DefaultPassword" and change its value to your login password, and then double-click the name of the "AutoAdminLogon" number to change the key value for REG_SZ to 1 (or other non-0). Quit Registry Editor and reboot to be done. If you suddenly don't want the system to automatically log in as an "administrator," just hold down the SHIFT key at startup.

5. Cancel the logon screen that appears when exiting the system

If you don't want to shut down fast enough, you can cancel the logon screen that appears when you exit the system, and you can use the following methods:

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Primary Key, double click on the right-hand side of the pane "Windows autologon" Numeric name (not built on your own), when the String Editor dialog box appears, you can change its key value to 0 in the string text box, and change the REG_SZ value of "ShutdownWithoutLogon" to 1 (or other non-0 values). When you restart NT, you will never see the boring logon screen again.

6. Auto Power off

Since Windows 2000 does not support ATX power Management, it is a drawback that the computer does not automatically turn off power after shutting down the system, but you can make a small change and try to get the system to do it yourself, and you can use the following methods:

Enter HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Primary key, double click on the right-hand side of the pane "Powerdownaftershutdown" The value name, if it is not, can be added with the new command on the Edit menu, with a string value of the data type. When the String Editor dialog box appears, enter a value of 1 (or other non-0) in the string text box, and it's all done.

7. Change the wallpaper and background color when you log on or off the system

You can choose to log in (or shut down the system) when the background pattern, that is, set up when the launch screen "Start Login" dialog box, and asked to press the Ctrl+alt+delete key combination to log on to the Windows 2000 network background pattern, you can use the following methods:

Into the hkey_users\. DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop The primary key, double-click the "wallpaper" value name to the right of the pane, and when the String Editor dialog box appears, enter a full path and file name for a bitmap file that can be used as a wallpaper in the string text box (for example, C : \winnt\wallpaper.bmp), double-click the "tilewallpaper" value name on the right of the window, and when the String Editor dialog box appears, enter a value of 1 (or other non-0) in the string text box.

In addition, if you want to change the background color at logon, you can use the following methods:

Into the hkey_users\. DEFAULT\Control Panel\colors The primary key, double-click the "Background" value name to the right of the pane, and when the String Editor dialog box appears, enter a key value for the color in the string text box (see the definition of color values in the image processing software) , such as black to 0 0 0), the system defaults to "58 110 165".

8. Prohibit the operation of Dr.Watson

Dr.Watson is a self-contained system maintenance tool that displays when a program fails or crashes, but sometimes it is annoying to have a problem repeatedly reminded, and if you want to cancel it, you can use the following methods:

Enter the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AeDebug primary key, double-click the value name of "Auto" to the right of the pane, and when the String Editor dialog box appears, You can change its key value to 0 in the string text box.

9. Force WIN2000 to look for connections with the largest MTU in all connections

By default, WIN2000 sends information to a remote host using a maximum transmission unit of size 576 (Maximum transmission units, MTU, or packet size). If the data passes through a route that is not able to handle such a large packet, the packet is divided into fragmented transports, and there may be problems. To avoid this, you can modify the registry to force WIN2000 to look for connections with the largest MTU in all connections, using the following methods:

Enter HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet

\services\tcpip\parameters The primary key, double-click the EnablePMTUDiscovery value name on the right of the pane (if you do not have this name, you can add it by using the Add Value command on the Edit menu with a data type of double-byte value). When the Double Byte Value Editor dialog box appears, you can enter 1 in the Data text box.

(Note: The modification techniques described above are passed in Windows Server, but most can also be used in Windows NT)
